On a recent college tour of Columbia with my niece, I realized what a privilege and luxury it was to have had two solid years to devote to making art. It was also a lot of fun.

I came to Columbia immediately after graduating from Wellesley, where I had majored in Studio Art. As a junior, I’d studied at The Tyler School of Art’s Rome campus. I was excited to be in Manhattan. I gained many insights from my advisor, the celebrated painter Richard Pousette-Dart, and from visiting artists like Stephen Greene, Christopher Wilmarth and Brice Marden who came to our studios to deliver individual critiques. Of lasting value to me were art history courses with Lawrence Alloway, Max Kozloff, Marcia Tucker, and the late, great Howard Hibbard and Kirk Varnedoe. I received practical experience and welcome advice from artists Marcia Hafif and Nina Yankowitz, for whom I worked as a studio assistant.

Life takes many paths and I have worked in advertising, publishing/journalism, and raised a family. While painting has not been the central focus that it was during my tenure at Columbia, I have always continued to make art.

I have recently been working on small-scale oil pastels, like the ones shown here, and am happy with the intimate quality of these works on paper. I think of them as little paintings rather than drawings. For the most part, they are loosely based on landscapes and/or scenes seen from my windows.
