On Thursday, December 2 at 7:30 pm, The Augustine Club sponsored a lecture by Fr. Bob Connor entitled "Understanding Sex in Light of the Holy Trinity." Fr. Bob said that the key to understanding sex is the reveald truth that man and woman were created in the image of God, who is not a monolith but a triplicity of persons whose very being is relationality ("gift") to each other. As the body is the self-expression of the spirit, sex and the sexual act--properly understood as the COMPLETE giving of oneself (including gametes) in the context of the irrevocable committment of matrimony--are an imaging of the persons of the Trinity and of the total self-giving of Christ on the cross. Thus, "there cannot be any separation between love making and life giving," as happen in in vitro fertilization, contraception, and other sexual perversions. At least twenty people attended the talk, which lasted about an hour with about twenty-five minutes for questions afterward. Even after the event was officially over, most of the audience remained for some time to ask further questions.
