Columbia University Badminton Club: Basic Club Rules

Warm up with old birds. Take one new bird when the game starts. If you see anyone break this rule, politely explain the rule to him/her. Try to make one bird last two games; the birds cost about $1 each.

Everyone should help with equipment. For current practices, anyone who plays till 10pm on Monday or 11pm on Friday should do some cleanup before leaving: gather birds, stack club rackets, pick up trash, or take down nets. If you play early, please come at 7pm on Monday and Friday and help set up.

Return club racquets to the pile after playing. Personal racquets should be kept to the sides, so to avoid missing racquets.

Up to  four players are allowed on a court. More than that is dangerous and disruptive.

Play two double's games or one single's game and come off. When the courts get crowded, do not warm up more than 5 minutes.

Don’t walk across the corners of the courts. This is especially a problem at Barnard.

Help with policing. Remind members of basic rules if they break them and if someone new asks to play, explain how the club works.

Be willing to play with members of all levels. Try to make games even by dividing the sides to have the most even skill combination.

Everyone should coach or play with a new member for one set. High-ranking members can coach middle players, and on down the line. If you have just started, you can show a total beginner how to score. Everyone has something that they can teach.

This is a membership club. Membership dues are collected at the beginning of each semester (fall, spring and summer). The current due is $35 per semester.

Please be considerate to your fellow players and follow these basic ideas, and we can all have an enjoyable time.
