SCHOOLS

Take biggest hit

"Of course we feel it," said a Morris High School teacher. "Is there anybody who doesn't?"

Included in the proposed budget is a hefty 7.7 percent cut to the Board of Education. The budget would drop from $3.07 billion to $2.84 billion.

It's too early to gauge the effect on borough schools, but programs will definitely be in danger, including extracurricular activities.

"We'll probably go back to a very basic subject matter," said Raymond Legague, a teacher at Jane Addams High School. "But the union has said we're not going back on teachers' salaries."

At William H. Taft High School, the cuts will affect extra-hours courses, like Regents Test study sessions, and summer and night school.

Said David Tartleff, the teachers' union representative: "If it's a choice between letting teachers go and eliminating classes, obviously the classes are going to go."
