Area high schools still aren't making the grade

By Ross A. Snel, Staff Reporter

As Schools Chancellor Ramon Cortines hands out report cards for the city's high schools, several South Bronx schools are getting failing grades.

The Board of Education is distributing the report cards to parents throughout the city. The cards provide information ranging from test scores to the percentage of students enrolled in honors courses.

South Bronx schools ranked at the bottom in several performance categories -- including average SAT scores, attendance and student performance on state tests.

University Heights High School, at University Avenue and West 181st Street, had the city's lowest average SAT score. South Bronx High School, at 701 St. Ann's Ave., and Jane Addams High School, at 900 Tinton Ave., ranked third and fifth lowest, respectively.

James Monroe High School, at 1300 Boynton Ave., had the poorest record of scores on the state's math test. William H. Taft High School, at 240 E. 172nd St., was third worst.

Taft also ranked fourth lowest in reading scores and had the worst attendance record in the city, with almost three out of ten students absent each day.
