C3032: Grading of Individual Tests
The letter grades for each test are assigned based on the mean and the standard deviation. The following is a table that illustrates how letter grades are assigned to numerical grades:
At least 1.33 standard deviations above the mean |
A |
Between 1 (inclusive) and 1.33 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
A- |
Between 0.67 (inclusive) and 1 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
B+ |
Between 0.33 (inclusive) and 0.67 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
B |
Between 0 (inclusive) and 0.33 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
B- |
Between 0.33 (inclusive) and 0 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
C+ |
Between 0.67 (inclusive) and 0.33 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
C |
Between 1 (inclusive) and 0.67 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
C- |
Between 2 (inclusive) and 1 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
D |
At least 2 standard deviations below the mean |
F |
So, if for a specific test the mean is 63.7 and the standard deviation is 16, the grades are assigned as is shown in the following table:
At least 1.33 standard deviations above the mean |
84.98 -> 100 |
A |
Between 1 (inclusive) and 1.33 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
79.70 -> 84.97 |
A- |
Between 0.67 (inclusive) and 1 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
74.42 -> 79.69 |
B+ |
Between 0.33 (inclusive) and 0.67 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
68.98 -> 74.41 |
B |
Between 0 (inclusive) and 0.33 (exclusive) standard deviations above the mean |
63.70 -> 68.97 |
B- |
Between 0.33 (inclusive) and 0 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
58.42 -> 63.69 |
C+ |
Between 0.67 (inclusive) and 0.33 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
53.14 -> 58.41 |
C |
Between 1 (inclusive) and 0.67 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
47.70 -> 53.13 |
C- |
Between 2 (inclusive) and 1 (exclusive) standard deviations below the mean |
31.70 -> 47.69 |
D |
At least 2 standard deviations below the mean |
0 -> 31.69 |
F |
