COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVE

This class will cover selected topics of Human Physiology. You will gain an appreciation for the dynamic way body systems perform and coordinate their functions to maintain overall homeostasis and health. The lessons will highlight several fundamental physiological principles that reappear from system to system. Some of these principles include: pressure/flow dynamics, the strategic use of osmotic, concentration, & electrochemical gradients and mechanisms of local vs. systemic homeostatic control. There will also be reading assignments from the current literature that will be discussed in class. These readings will expose you to a few sources of emerging information in science and medicine. In addition to their content, we will discuss how these sources differ, what their appropriate uses are, and how to read these articles critically.

COURSE PLAN

This class will cover five topics: Introduction to Homeostasis and Cell Physiology, Digestion, Renal Physiology, Respiratory Physiology, and Cardiovascular Physiology. There will be weekly homework assignments that will give you practice applying the information taught in class. The class is divided into four sections; near the end of each section, one class period will be devoted to a discussion of the assigned reading. Each reading assignment will be accompanied by several guide questions for you to answer and bring with you to the discussion. These guide questions will help facilitate the discussion and will also be collected and graded. Finally, there will be an exam at the end of each section and a cumulative Final Exam at the end of the term.
