A nice example of a newspaper article that offers a critical view of the research being reported. Hints of an Alzheimer's aid in anti-inflammatory drugs.
Note that Kolata describes how this work lends further support to a theory; previous work was short-term, and may have been retrospective, relying on inaccurate memories about what drugs had been taken; so this longer study with better records of drugs was undertaken; the design was observational-prospective; a weakness of this design is that subjects decided themselves whether or not to take anti-inflammatory drugs, so drug takers may have differed from nontakers in some other way, too; a good followup study would be interventional, with the investigators randomly assigning people to take or not take the drug.
