James Lohner
Graduate Student
After growing up in New Jersey I moved to Lewisburg, Pa to attend Bucknell University. I did my undergraduate studies in Physics with a minor in French. I always intended on continuing my studies in the sciences, but right out of undergrad I couldn’t decide which area. After working in a few different labs I decided on Biology, and ended up at Columbia. I don’t have a very precise research focus yet. Directly prior to enrolling I worked in a process development lab at Hemispherx Biopharma in NJ, but since I’m still kind of new to the field I’ll use my coursework here and my laboratory rotations to help me find exactly which sub-discipline I’d like to study in depth. I’m excited to further my education and learn more about the intricacies and problems in modern biology, and to start to make contributions to the field. I’m also looking forward to integrating myself into the Columbia community and seeing what it has to offer in addition to academics.

This will be my third year in NYC. I’m missing Alphabet City, where I moved from, but Morningside Hts has it’s own charm, and it’s always fun to explore a new neighborhood. Outside of work I enjoy activities like tennis, cycling, hiking, and rock climbing. I also love to ski in the winter, and I go down the shore as much as possible in the summer.
