Julian Scherer
Graduate Student
I was born and raised in Mannheim, Germany and attended university across the Neckar at the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg, Germany. At Ruprecht-Karls, I earned a BSc in 2005 and a MSc in 2007 in the field of Molecular Biotechnology. As a Masters student, my areas of study focused on cancer and structural biology research. For my Master's thesis, which I researched in the Schirrmacher/Beckhove lab at the German Cancer Research Center, I explored cellular immune response against malignant cells. The goal of my research was to look at pancreatic cancer patients and determine the migration capacity of T cell subpopulations through endothelial cells. My reseach produced results which mapped differences in the transmigration rate of effector and regulatory T cells. I am still intrigued by many of the hypotheses explored in my thesis research and hope to be able to continue to explore the field of tumor immunology as a doctoral student.

In the Fall of 2006, I worked as an intern at Thomas Schwartz's lab at MIT, studying the structure of building blocks of the nuclear pore complex. At MIT, I encountered an entirely different approach to research and scientific inquiry than I was accustomed to in Germany. I decided as a product of my experience that I was eager to continue my research in the United States and thus am very grateful and excited to be able continue research in the Biology department at Columbia University.

During incubation times, I like to travel for as long and to as far as I can manage. I additionally enjoy sailing, playing soccer, hanging out with friends, and reading a good book.
