Kyle Stahmer
Graduate Student
Having just graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.S. in biochemistry in June 2009, I am now looking forward to continuing my scientific career and education at Columbia. During my undergraduate studies I researched in the structural biology lab of Dr. Juli Feigon, where my main projects focused on attempting to solve the structures of two telomerase holoenzyme components using x-ray crystallographic and EM methods: p65, a protein component of Tetrahymena telomerase critical for holoenzyme biogenesis, and the pseudoknot core domain from Medaka fish telomerase RNA (TER). My time in the Feigon lab not only gave me a wide range of experience with techniques fundamental to biochemistry and structural biology, but also provided me with an opportunity to live the life of a scientific researcher and interact with colleagues both within and across scientific disciplines. Perhaps most importantly, my undergraduate research allowed me to realize that I can remain enthusiastic about my research in spite of numerous failed attempts and unforeseen dilemmas.

While my past research experience has been primarily concerned with structural biology, I plan on broadening my horizons during my time at Columbia and venturing into the fields of cell biology, molecular biology and protein-protein interactions, where my current interests lie. I presently look forward to my first year rotations where I will be able to explore these areas and solidify my research path.

Although I have lived in California my entire life, having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I am tremendously excited about coming to New York City and hope that I can make the most of my time on the East Coast. When not in lab, I will likely be out exploring the city and indulging in the vast array of Manhattan cuisine, as well as continuing to pursue my other interests in recording music, playing tennis, watching hockey and writing fiction.
