 | I just graduated from Hillsdale College in 2007 with a B.S. in chemistry and a minor in math. Hillsdale is in Michigan, as is my hometown, a suburb of Detroit. So far I have researched two roughly biochemical areas: first the effect of ethanol on lipid metabolism in chicken embryos at my home institution, and second designing microarrays for surface plasmon resonance bioanalytical detection using photolithography in the Cheng group at the University of California - Riverside. My interest in biology grew throughout college, but it is still fairly unspecified. I will probably focus on molecular biology here, but I will seriously consider rotations in a neuro and/or systems group. I find research into diseases particularly meaningful, but biology is a generally interesting subject, so I do not plan to confine myself to such groups. My career plan is to remain in academia; I love the atmosphere of unabashed, learned inquiry. I am very excited to see where biological science goes in my lifetime.
In my free time I enjoy music, sports, and reading. I have run track for 11 years and will probably continue to run in New York, although lately I have replaced it somewhat with tennis. I love playing and listening to music; I hear there are some decent concerts in NYC. Apart from science I like to read and discuss other subjects including politics, philosophy, and religion.
