I grew up in India and landed in Illinois to do my MS in SIUC while working on chromatin remodeling and transcription. I decided to have a breather for a few years to understand more about my scientific interests. I joined Prof. Susan Lindquist's lab at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research as a research technician where I studied the "awesome power of yeast genetics" and its use in deciphering the mechanism of neurodegenerative diseases like Huntington's disease. After working for three years directly with a greatly inspired scientist, I learnt a great deal about the ins and outs of scientific research. After a lot of soul searching, I have found that the human brain is the most fascinating thing in the world. I would like to study and learn more about how the brain works during my graduate study at Columbia.
While I enjoy being a lab rat, I also love music dearly. It’s my passion to experiment with music. Having been trained as an Indian classical singer, I like learning more about world music and how Indian music is related to music from all over the world. I enjoy reading mostly non fiction - J. Krishnamurthy and Herman Hesse being my favorite authors. I love taking long walks and running till I drop dead. All forms of art give me joy, especially theatre and parallel cinema. |
