Course Description Fundamental concepts in the dynamics of rotating, stratified flows. Geostrophic and hydrostatic balances, potential vorticity, f and beta plane approximations, gravity and Rossby waves, geostrophic adjustment and quasigeostrophy, baroclinic and barotropic instabilities, Sverdrup balance, boundary currents, Ekman layers.
