Course Description Prerequisites: Sign up through special tab in eBear. Enrollment limited to Barnard senior English majors. Offer in Spring, 2013: Charles Dickens: the life, the works, the legend, in as much detail as we can manage in one semester.  Reading will include Pickwick Papers, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Bleak House, and selections from his friend John Forster's Life of Charles Dickens, as well as other works to be chosen by the class.  Special emphasis will be given to Dickens's literary style and genius for characterization, in the context of Victorian concerns about money, class, gender, and the role of art in an industrializing society.  Students will be expected to share in creating the syllabus, presenting new material, and leading class discussion.  Be prepared to do a LOT of reading--all of it great!--plus weekly writing on Courseworks.
