Course Description

Before he wrote the Canterbury Tales, Chaucer was a famed European poet, steeped in the medieval tradition and fascinated with the convergence of history, gender, and power. Our course will focus on one dream vision, The Parliament of Fowls, and then the great romance Troilus and Criseyde. Along the way, we’ll explore (in translation) earlier European texts that framed and inspired Chaucer’s work.
