| Course Description | In this seminar we will explore historical and contemporary ideas about education, race and democracy. Drawing on multiple disciplinary frameworks, we will examine conceptions of the role of education in a democracy and the tensions between ideals of democracy, the exclusionary treatment of particular groups, and their struggles for inclusion in the democratic polity at different points in our history as a nation. We will consider the ways public education reproduces as well as challenges inequality and discuss its potential to provide skills and dispositions for democratic citizenship in our increasingly diverse society |
