Course Description       In this seminar we will explore historical and contemporary ideas about education, race and democracy.   Drawing on multiple disciplinary frameworks, we will examine conceptions of the role of education in a democracy and the tensions between ideals of democracy, the exclusionary treatment of particular groups, and their struggles for inclusion in the democratic polity at different points in our history as a nation. We will consider the ways public education reproduces as well as challenges inequality and discuss its potential to provide skills and dispositions for democratic citizenship in our increasingly diverse society
