Course Description Proseminar for Graduate Students only. This graduate class, taught in German, will explore how "rumor" and "world literature" emerged as two ostensibly opposite but closely related models to conceptualize the accelerated circulation of texts in print media around 1800. Specific attention will be paid to texts by Herder, Kant, Goethe, Büchner, Marx, Kleist, and others. We will also explore the parallels between new print formats in the nineteenth century and social media today.
