Course Description This course offers a graduate level introduction to the literature of nineteenth century U.S. history. It uses a reading list of recently published and classic texts to help students map the critical questions and debates that have shaped the field. The list is designed to represent key methodological developments, including in gender and transnational histories. Taken as a whole, the course seeks to situate the United States within the nineteenth century world and to identify the broad set of historical forces that worked to define it. The course is designed to serve as an introduction to graduate study in American history, as preparation for Ph.D. field exams, and as a place to explore potential dissertation topics.
