Course Description

How were love and longing imagined and articulated in early-modern South Asia? How do romantic themes and literary genres cross perceived divides between religions, realities, and geographical regions? This class explores themes of romance and love in South Asia and introduces students to a corpus of early-modern Indian literature including the Premakhyan (love story) genre, Bhakti and Sufi devotional poetry, courtly Kavya poetry, and the Ghazal literary tradition, among others.
