Course Description India is the world's largest film-producing nation, releasing over 900 films every year. Nearly 90 percent of these films belong to the Hindi language commercial cinema, also known more commonly as Bollywood. Bollywood is an exceptional industry, holding its own against Hollywood's expansion into markets like India. This course will provide a historical and thematic introduction to the wide panorama of Indian films with a particular focus on the themes of gender, identity and sexuality. Screenings will include iconic and popular films like: Mother India (1957), Guide (1965), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), The Dirty Picture (2011), and Kahaani (2012).
