Course Description | This four week course explores how some citizens of the United States are prevented from realizing full economic and political citizenship. Students will examine the structural design of American political institutions, federal policy and the individuals that are charged with the responsibility of moving people from dependence on social programs to advancement to economic independence as full active citizens. What is it about the design of these policies and their implementation that prevents the achievement of economic independence for so many African-Americans in this country. And, what is the relationship between economic independence and the exercise of full political citizenship? We will identify and examine federal policies and the programs designed to be implemented by cities to provide assistance, the governing bodies and private institutions responsible for implementation. This course will equip students with the skills necessary to analyze current and former policy and develop their own innovative solutions that increase access to economic and social opportunity. |
