Course Description The course provides historical perspectives on the development of modern Ukraine and analyses the evolution of its politics since Independence in 1991 till the Presidential elections due next January. While providing an assessment of political, social and economic transformations and their impact on domestic and foreign policy, the course will examine major causes of ongoing turmoil in the country, specifically the remaining legacy of the Soviet Union. The results of the forthcoming Presidential elections will be thoroughly discussed. The class will also be able to analyze Ukraine�s relationship with its major partners: Russia, Europe and the US, its membership in the United Nations, its quest for Euro-Atlantic integration and the renunciation of its nuclear arsenal .The issues of national security will be dealt with extensively.
