COURSE EXEMPTION INFORMATION
EXEMPTION POLICY
In order to exempt out of a core course, students must take an exam of a reasonable length, which reflects the general knowledge required. No exemptions will be granted through an appeal process. The grade on the exemption exam is final. No exemption exam may be retaken. Exemptions do not reduce the 21 courses required for the MBA degree; they enable students to take additional electives.
SCHEDULING EXEMPTION EXAMS
Exemption exams must be taken prior to the term in which the student is scheduled to take the core course.
Exemption exams for first term courses will be offered at the beginning of the semester during Orientation. The first term courses are: Managerial Economics (B6006), Accounting I (6013), Managerial Statistics (B6014), Corporate Finance (B6301) and Marketing (B6601). These exemption exams must be taken prior to the beginning of the first term.
Exemption exams for second term courses will be offered on two Fridays during the first term. If an exemption exam is passed at this time, the relevant core course will be dropped from the student’s second term schedule, thereby allowing him/her to choose an additional elective in the preliminary round of second term registration. If one prefers, it is also possible to take second term exemption exams just prior to the start of the second term, thus allowing extra time for study. If an exam is passed at this time, the relevant core course will be dropped in time to allow the student to choose an elective during the drop/add round of registration, after second term courses have begun. The second term courses are: Global Economic Environment (B6005), Leading and Managing in Organizations (B6012), Decision Models (B6015), Accounting II (B6016) and Operations Management (B6801). These exemption exams must be taken prior to the beginning of the second term.
An exemption exam for the third term core course, Strategic Management of the Enterprise (B8001), will be offered on two Fridays during the second term, and again just before the beginning of the third term. This exemption exam must be taken prior to the beginning of the third term.
Under no circumstances may exemption exams be taken after the beginning of the term in which the student is scheduled to take the course. And students may not defer a course because they have not as yet taken the exemption exam.
PREPARING FOR EXEMPTION EXAMS
Review materials from previous course work. This booklet contains information on specific topics covered, recommended readings and sample exams.
PROCEDURES FOR TAKING EXEMPTION EXAMS
Come to the exam room at the scheduled time. Check relevant course headings for materials you are allowed to bring to the exam room.
While waiting for the results of the exemption exams to be posted, students will remain registered in the core courses. It is recommended that students continue to attend the core, while also sitting in on a possible replacement course.
Results will be posted in the Student Affairs Office, 105 Uris. Only the names of those who pass the exams are posted. Results are not recorded on students’ academic transcripts. Students who pass an exemption exam must speak with the staff of the Student Affairs Office to drop the relevant core course and register for an elective in its place.
