C O N S T I T U T I O N

Preamble: This is the constitution of the Columbia organization Columbia Classical Performers. This document shall clarify the ongoing mission and procedures of Columbia Classical Performers.

Article I

Section 1. The name of this organization shall be Columbia Classical Performers, hereafter referred to as 'CCP.'

Section 2. The Executive Board of CCP, hereafter referred to as the 'Board,' shall be made up of the President, the Vice-President, the Treasurer, and the Secretary.
 

Article II

Section 1. The purpose of this organization shall be to promote the performance of classical music on and around Columbia's campus through concerts featuring Columbia musicians.  The concerts will benefit musicians by giving them an outlet for solo performance while benefiting the Columbia community by presenting free, high-quality classical music concerts.  

Section 2. The Board and CCP members shall coordinate all of the activities sponsored and cosponsored by CCP.  

Article III

Section 1. Membership is open to all undergraduate students in Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Barnard College, and the Graduate School of Fine Arts.  Members must share a love for music and must be willing to contribute to the purpose of the organization as stated in Article II, Section 1.  No student shall be excluded from membership on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, or disability.

Section 2. Only members may vote or hold office.

Section 3. The privileges and responsibilities of membership are:
a) To contribute and involve themselves earnestly with the activities sponsored and cosponsored by CCP
b) To attend weekly meetings  

Section 4. Membership may be revoked by a majority vote of the active members due to failure to meet the requirements stipulated by Article III, Section 3.
 

Article IV

Section 1. Meetings shall be held at least twice a month and shall be called by the Board.

Section 2. In order to vote on any matter of policy or procedure, the majority of members must agree.  In event of a tie, the Board will make the final decision.
 

Article V

Section 1. The organization shall have the following officers: President, Vice-President. Treasurer and Secretary.  Nominations for these positions can be made by any member in good standing. Officers shall be elected annually, with votes occurring midway through the spring semester.  A nominee must receive a majority vote to win an election. Each elected officer shall serve a term of one year. Any member is eligible to run for office and may run for re-election if so desired.

Section 2. The following will be the duties of the officers:
a) President
i. To represent CCP to the University and to the community beyond.
ii. To establish committees as necessary to achieve the objectives of CCP.
iii. To arrange meeting times and locations.
iv. To conduct meetings.

b) Vice-President
i. To represent CCP to the University and to the community beyond.
ii. To work alongside the President with his/her duties.
iii. To take the place of the President in the case that s/he is unable to perform his/her duties.

c) Treasurer
i. To handle all financial transactions.
ii. To maintain records of all financial matters.
iii. To help prepare budget proposals, requests, and appeals.

d) Secretary
i. To take minutes of meetings.
ii. To maintain records of organization activities.  

Section 3. An officer may be impeached and removed by the membership for failure to perform his/her duties. The specific charge shall be reviewed at a meeting at which time the membership shall decide whether to proceed with an impeachment vote. A two-thirds affirmative vote of the members present shall be required to confirm the removal of the officer.

Article VI

 

Section 1. By-laws of the organization shall be established and altered by majority vote by the members of CCP.  Any member may request to change a by-law.

Article VII

Any member may propose amendments to the Constitution.  Proposed amendments must be thoroughly discussed by all members before voting may occur. A majority of the voting membership is required to adopt an amendment.

Article VIII

This constitution shall be established by a vote of a three-fourths majority of the membership of the organization.
