The University Commencement ceremony of the 256th academic year will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. School ceremonies and events will take place in the days preceding Commencement.
University Commencement is a centuries-old tradition in which the Columbia University President grants degrees en masse to graduating students from all schools, colleges, and affiliated institutions. During this ceremony, other remarkable members of the Columbia community are also recognized through the conferring of medals, awards, and honorary degrees.
During Commencement Week, each school hosts its own ceremony —for example: Class Day, Graduation, Convocation, Diploma Presentation, etc.— to individually recognize graduates for their successful completion of requirements. Such events feature visiting speakers and often welcome graduates to stage, providing much-enjoyed photo opportunities to commemorate the occasion.
