Participants

The Baccalaureate Service is addressed to the candidates for the bachelor's degree from the following schools:

  • Columbia College
  • Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science
  • School of General Studies
  • Barnard College

All degree candidates from these schools are invited to attend. Academic regalia will be worn.

Procession

All students must assemble at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday May 18, 2008, for the procession into the chapel.

Please meet your school marshal at the following locations:

  • Columbia College: Assemble in Low Library, first floor, south corridor
  • SEAS: Assemble in Low Library, first floor, west corridor
  • General Studies: Assemble in Low Library, first floor, east corridor
  • Barnard College: Assemble in Barnard Hall

The chapel bells will ring at 10:15 a.m. to signal the start of the procession into St. Paul's Chapel.

Should it rain, there will be no formal procession. Instead, candidates will go directly to the chapel and take seats as directed by an usher.

Attendance

Tickets are not required for this event.

Families and friends of degree candidates from the schools listed above are warmly welcomed to attend the Baccalaureate Service.

Seating

Because of the popularity of this service and the limited seating in the chapel, we can guarantee seating only for degree candidates at this event. There will be additional seating under a tent on the chapel lawn, where guests may watch a live broadcast of the service.

Disability Services

Ushers will be available to assist guests with disabilities to designated seating areas. No special tickets are required.

Sign-language interpreters will be available to guests during the service.

Please note that the chapel is not air-conditioned.

Alma Mater is the name given to a sculpture of the goddess Minerva by Daniel Chester French on the outdoor steps leading to Low Memorial Library. Installed in 1904, Alma Mater has become a symbol of the University and a repository of its lore. French was an avid taxidermist and apparently hid many sculpted owls among his works. Indeed, there is an owl hidden in the folds of Alma Mater's cloak, and Columbia superstition has it that the first member of the incoming class to find the owl will become class valedictorian.
