Alexandra Lohse
"Total War: Endurance and Defeat in Nazi Germany, 1943 to 1945"

Abstract
My dissertation examines German popular opinion and social reality during the final years of WWII. It will be based on sources generated both by Nazi authorities and by Allied intelligence organizations. American intelligence documents are available at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, where I have begun examining the records of the morale operations of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, a predecessor organization of the CIA). I also plan to visit the National Archives at Kew, U.K., during a two-week trip to London in February 2009 in order to familiarize myself with the site and collections. The CES Fellowship would allow me to conduct preliminary research in this and other British and German archives.
