This past Sunday November 14, 2010 an epic
soccer match took place at East River Park at 11am: Columbia’s Chemistry
Department met NYU’s Chemistry Department for the battle of New York
City...
Professor Marcus Weck (NYU) challenged our own Chemistry Department Chair, Colin
Nuckolls, several months ago. Professor Nuckolls accepted and, after
several rounds of high-level negotiation, the stage was set: November 14th,
11am, NYU in dark jerseys, Columbia in white. Rumor has it that NYU had been
practicing for months. Columbia Chemists had their first practice
last Friday morning...
And the result?
Columbia Chemistry 9, NYU Chemistry 3
Professor Jim Leighton led the offensive onslaught with 2 goals and a
dynamic forward presence, and Andrew Crowther (Postdoc, Brus Group) and Alex
Brucks (Grad Student, Snyder Group) also added 2 goals a piece. Along the
way Stephen Kanyiva (Postdoc, Snyder Group), Matteo Palma
(Postdoc, Nuckolls), and Zhang Wang (Grad Student, Danishefsky Group)
each kicked in to the scoring column. Sujun Wei and Alon Gorodetsky,
the goalkeeping Postdoc tandem from the Nuckolls Group, kept NYU scoreless
until late in the second half, but the result was never in doubt.
Professor Nuckolls and Bertrand Adanve (Grad Student, Snyder Group)
controlled the defense and the midfield, respectively. Adding fine defense were
Severin Schneebli (Grad student, Friesner Group), Michael Ewing
(Nuckolls Group), and Ferenc Kontes (Grad Student, Snyder Group). And
running NYU ragged from the midfield were Jeff Meisner (Grad Student,
Nuckolls Group), Dani Sedbrook (Grad Student, Nuckolls Group), Amy
Scott (Postdoc, Turro/Nuckolls Groups), and Salima Bahri (undergrad,
McDermott Group).
