Periodic Motion

In the summer of 1994 we eveloped a software module on one dimensional periodic motion as part of the Columbia Chemistry Department's EDISON PROJECT. Using MATHEMATICA and DIRECTOR we showed how the displacement, momentum, orbit in phase space, potential energy, and kinetic energy varied in time. The harmonic oscillator, Morse oscillator and pendulum were compared and contrasted. In this movie one can play movies as well as manually move the sliders. For this WEB demonstration, I have deleted front end graphics of a Grand Father Clock with Moving Pendulum. To quit this application DO NOT PRESS QUIT. Instead go back to previous page.

Time Dependent Kinetics for Simple Two Step Reaction

During 1995, in collaboration with my son, we developed a simple module to demonstrate the two step first order chemical reaction in which the reactant, A, reversibly transforms to intermediate B which subsequently irreversibly transforms to product C. The rate constants for the A to B reaction and the B to C reaction are fixed, but the rate constant for the reverse reaction B to A can be chosen from a pull down menu under the backward arrow. This movie was designed to work on a Quadra. On the WEB it is necessary to click the play button very quickly and lightly to make the movie play. Also the moving line indicating the instantaneous progress of the reaction can be moved with the mouse. DO NOT PRESS HELP as there is no help screens. Pressing HELP will make it impossible to play anything but the case with no back reaction in the first step. If you mistakenly press HELP, go back to the previous page and restart this module.
