How to Throw Things Away In Chemistry

This is a brief primer on how to actually get things discarded in Chemistry. Not all department members are aware of what the current policy is, so in the interests of educating our community, here we go…

To Dispose of:

Regular or daily trash

Includes wastebaskets in both labs and offices

Who Does It: Custodial Staff
Who Pays For It: No Charge from Custodial

Office and Lab Cleanups

includes old journals, files, magazines, journals, books, and other assorted "spring cleaning" type of items.

Who Does It: Custodial Staff
Who Pays For It: Research group must provide a chargeable account number

or arrangements need to be made with Building Services Staff.

Equipment Disposal

Custodians do not pick up any equipment that needs to be discarded. This includes monitors, computers, lab instruments, copy machines, fax machines or the like.

Bar-Coded University Property

Equipment disposals should be first cleared with Don Edwards in the Controller's Office
He is responsible for removing bar-coded items from Chemistry's inventory.

email: de2@columbia.edu
fax: 212/854-1048

Building Services staff will contact the Controller's office, arrange for items to be removed from University inventory, and dispose of the item(s).

Who Does It:            Building Services staff
Who Pays For It:     no charge

Non-bar-coded Items

Who Does It:            Building Services staff

Who Pays For It:     no charge

If you need assistance with removing items from your office or lab, please email William Reynolds, wr130@columbia.edu,  who can help you coordinate the disposal of your items.

Under no circumstances should department members leave items in the hallways or worse yet, in the grove area. This tends to promote trash accumulation in these areas and poses both a serious health and fire hazard.
