Gerard Parkin received his B. A. (First Class), M. A., and D. Phil degrees from the Queen’s College, Oxford University. Both his graduate and undergraduate research was carried out under the guidance of Professor Malcolm L. H. Green. In 1985, he moved to the California Institute of Technology as a NATO postdoctoral fellow to work with Professor John E. Bercaw. He joined the faculty of Columbia University as Assistant Professor in 1988 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1991 and to Professor in 1994. He served as Chairman of the Department from 1999 – 2002. Among other awards, he is a recipient of the Presidential Faculty Fellowship Award, the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry, the American Chemical Society Award in Organometallic Chemistry, the Royal Society of Chemistry Corday Morgan Medal and the Royal Society of Chemistry Award in Organometallic Chemistry. His principal research interests are in the areas of synthetic, structural, and mechanistic inorganic chemistry and he is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Chemical Society.
