Kratom, a native plant of Southeast Asia, has shown promises for treating opioid addictions but has been under constant administrative threat to be regulated. Our lab has shown that mitragynine, the major active ingredient of kratom, produces 7-hydroxymitragynine in mice when consumed orally, which accounts for the majority of opioid analgesic activity but with fewer therapeutic side effects than other commonly used opioids.
