Douglas P. Murray

Douglas P. Murray is President of the Lingnan Foundation, a New York philanthropy supporting higher education in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. During 1998, he served concurrently as President pro tem of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, an organization he first joined as Program Director and Vice President (1970-75) and subsequently served as a member of its Board and Executive Committee.

Earlier, Dr. Murray held several positions related to Asia: Director of the U.S.-China Relations Program at Stanford University (1975-81); Vice President of the East-West Center in Honolulu (1981-84), Executive Secretary of the Committee on International Relations Studies with the PRC; and, from 1986-88, President of China Institute in America, New York. He first traveled to Asia in 1958 to teach English at New Asia College, Hong Kong, through the Yale-China Association, and has taught at New Zealand’s Victoria University and in Singapore while serving as Representative of The Asia Foundation.

Dr. Murray attended Yale University (B.A. in Behavioral Science, 1958; M.A. Southeast Asian Studies, 1961) and received the Ph.D. in International Development Education from Stanford. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a Trustee of the Yale-China Association. As a board member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, he initiated a series of exchange projects and conferences on global environment, comprehensive security, and sustainable development issues, and authored a summary report on "American Interests in China’s Environment."

Murray also serves as President of Vermont Coverts, Inc.: Woodlands for Wildlife.
