John W. Kunstadter

 

John W. Kunstadter was born on October 20, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and College as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned an SB in physics. He also attended New York University.

Kunstadter’s professional experience includes reactor startup and evaluation at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York from 1949 to 1951; independent research from 1951 to 1952; purchasing, sales, manufacturing, and international operations at The Formfit Company in Chicago from 1951 to 1960; all corporate activities as President of Formfit International in Chicago, Jamaica and England from 1954 to 1963; product design of Formfit-Rogers in New York from 1963 to 1965; and Director of Corporate Research and Development of Genesco, Inc. and subsidaries from 1965 to 1969.

Non-profit activities include the founding and the positions of Treasurer and President of the Albert Kunstadter Family Foundation, a small, general-purpose charitable foundation, operating primarily outside the United States, and secondarily in the New York City area. Kunstadter also serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Council of the Arts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has been a member of the Executive Committee, Grants Committee, M.I.T. Museum Advisory Board, and McDermott Award Committee since 1978. He has also been a member of the M.I.T. Alumni Association since 1953 and the M.I.T. New York Center since 1956. He has been Director of the Menninger Foundation since 1985 and the director and treasurer of Bargemusic in Brooklyn, New York since 1995. He served as Director of the Council on Foundations in Washington D.C. from 1989 to 1995.

Kunstadter has also served briefly on Management and Audit Committees and Membership and International Committees in both the late 1970’s and between 1994 and 1996. He has been active in family foundation activities since 1985 and served on the Annual Conference Planning Committee from 1996 to 1998. He is currently Director of the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers, with whom he has held various posts since the 1980’s.
