Weerachat Premananda

 

Weerachat Premananda is a professor of Musical Composition at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition to having a strong academic reputation, he has been recognized as one of the most established and accomplished composers in Southeast Asia. He served as Executive Committee Member of the Asian Composers League (ACL) from 1990 to 1997.

His compositions have been performed by world-renowned artists and orchestras, including the Cadenza, the Ensemble of Asia, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, the National Choir of Malaysia, the Auckland Philharmonia, the National Vietnamese Symphony Orchestra, the National Taiwanese Symphony Orchestra, and the Uzbekistan National Symphony Orchestra.

His awards include first prize in composition by the Composers Association of New Zealand at Nelon Composers Workshop in 1994, the Japan Foundation fellowship for Visiting Lecturer of Composition at the Tokyo University in 1991, the Chulalongkorn University scholarship for advance training in conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, London in 1989 and the Fulbright Fellowship for research in Improvisational Aspect of Thai and American Music at Columbia University under the supervision of Chou Wen-chung in 1997. After graduating from the University of the Philippines with a Master of Music in 1983, Premananda was awarded a scholarship from the Chulalongkorn University for Doctoral work at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
