" Afterhours Tutoring is a very rewarding experience, and many of the kids are eager to learn and want your help. Some of the kids struggle at math or reading, and at times teaching can be frustrating. It takes tremendous patience and creativity to come up with new ways to get the kids excited about learning and to make them understand how this or that works, but it is amazing to see the light-bulb flash when the kids figure out and understand how to multiply 9 by 7 or to sound a word out...

... Another great part of this program is we organize parties where we can play with the kids. The kids love these parties and it is a great opportunity to get to know the kids even better. By volunteering, I provide students with a little more support and attention; I help them learn and become more confident. Working with the kids is the most rewarding part."

Afterhours Tutoring is a tutoring initiative that teams Columbia/Barnard students with children from the Volunteer of America's Regent House. Participants can choose to tutor children from the shelter once to three times a week. In the past, Afterhours has focused on helping elementary and middle school children with their homework. This year the program will also include exciting new initiatives like teen nights and tutoring for standardized testing. Afterhours is a great way to give back to the community; tutors have often developed close relationships with the children from Regent House and found the experience to be extremely rewarding.
