" After a year at Columbia, I knew I wanted to get involved in a community service tutoring program. One-to-One tutoring gave me the opportunity to sit with second grade children, individually, and to assist them with math, reading, or writing. I learned how different kids process different material and how each child requires a very particular kind of assistance...

One-to-One
Tutoring

...The unique aspect of the one on one interaction was especially gratifying for me as it enabled me to both assist the kids with their everyday studies and to get to know each child on a personal level and to understand a little bit about the child's backround."

New York City Public Schools often lack the resources and tools to give children that are struggling in school the time and attention they require. The goal of the One-To-One Weekday Tutoring Program is to provide students, who cannot afford a private tutor and who are unable to attend volunteer tutoring sessions outside of school, with extra help so that they can develop the skills they need to progress in school. Tutors, dedicating at least two hours each week volunteering at P.S. 165, find the experience both rewarding and unique as they are able to help educate struggling students as well as observe the inner workings of the public school system.
