About Us
The Columbia University Cigar Society was founded in the fall of 1995 by
Jason DeLuca. We have gone from having only 15 members to over 350
members. Our club is made up of men and women from Columbia College,
Barnard College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied
Sciences, and the Columbia Business School. We are officially recognized
by Columbia University and receive funding from them each year.
The preamble to our club's constitution sums up best what we are all
about: "It is the intent of our society to bring together all persons who
are interested in gaining of leadership and life skills, while acquiring
the knowledge and appreciation for the world of cigars." "Our society
wants to advance the interests and integrity of each individual
member."
Our club was designed in order to give men and women of all backgrounds
the opportunity to meet new and interesting people in a relaxed and casual
atmosphere while contributing something back to the community. We have had
over a dozen events since our first gathering 4 years ago, including a
charity cruise where we raised over $2500 for children with AIDS at a
local hospital. It is our club's intention to build a network of college
clubs across the United States so that more students can enjoy cigars
while positively affecting their surrounding community.
Our club hopes to spark a new trend in which more young people are giving
back to their community through their fund raising efforts created through
the enjoyment of cigars. We envision our generation as being one that will
"slow down" and begin to appreciate the world in which we live by taking
time out to enjoy fine cigars, music, art, wine, and many more of life's
little pleasures. Due to the fast paced computer world that we live in
today, we feel it is more important than ever to take time out of our busy
schedules to relax and learn to appreciate new things.
