New Visiting Scholar

The Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics is pleased to announce the arrival of a visiting scholar.
Hakim Abdelgader is a full
professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Al-Fateh University,
Tripoli, Libya. He specializes in concrete materials, in particular mix
designs, durability, and repair of concrete structures. Hosted by Prof.
Christian Meyer, who shares with him an interest in the use of recycled
materials for concrete production, he has been working extensively with
"two-stage concrete," which refers to the pre-placement of aggregate
and promises a number of advantages in concrete construction. Professor
Abdelgader, who has received his graduate degrees from the Technical University
of Gdansk in Poland, is a voting member of American Concrete Institute
Committees 221, 304, 444 and 555. He will be staying at Columbia University for
about three months.
