How do I start using VPN secured remote access?
-Install the Cisco VPN client and configure your computers to use Remote Desktop Access

Note: Columbia CUIT has licensed the Cisco VPN Client to secure your connection to Columbia. Please note that Microsoft's Remote Desktop by itself is considered unsecured. The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) transmits data such as your password, and any data you are working with in an unsecured hash, which can be easily deciphered with special software. It also transmits your username in clear text, which can be captured with any common network sniffer. A VPN Connection is needed to secure your connections.

Overview

Imagine being able to securely access your desktop computer from anywhere in the world (home, Greece, Taiwan, Turkey, China, etc.). Imagine being able to bypass restrictive networks and restrictions. Imagine the freedom of mobility, access and choice. This is VPN Secured Remote Desktop.

Common uses:

-Remote access to Columbia's onsite only services. (Videos, libraries, etc.)
-Get that file or presentation you left behind on your desktop from anywhere.
-Check that important data or email you have only stored on your work computer.
-Run resource intense programs on your desktop and check their progress remotely.
-Avoid expensive licensing issues by remotely accessing one main computer with a shared license.
-Have the option to avoid that needed trip to the office over the weekend, Holidays or when home sick
-Have the option to work from home, without worrying about offsite IP restrictions or access to you work resources.
