Description:

The Columbia Men's Lacrosse Club is among the most successful teams on Columbia's campus. The team competes in the National Club Lacrosse League (NCLL), which is the nation's largest collegiate club lacrosse league. Two years ago, the team won the NCLL national championship at the University of Kutztown in Pennsylvania defeating Cortland State in the finals. The lacrosse club welcomes players of any skill level or age, and all Columbia affiliates are welcome (including graduate students and all other affiliates). While there are graduate students who played D1 college lacrosse and undergraduates who were standouts at their respective high schools, there are also mid-range and even beginners who come out eager to play the game. There is fall practice on Wednesday evenings and some weekend scrimmages. However, the main season is in the spring when practices and games become more frequent and rigorous.

Accomplishments:

Over the past two years the men's lacrosse team has played NYU in a one hour exhibition match at Madison Square Garden as a pregame to New York's professional indoor lacrosse team, the Titans. The Titans organization has forged a close tie with the Columbia lacrosse club and has hosted the team with parties and promotional events. The lacrosse club has also enjoyed substantial press coverage from the Columbia Spectator and online lacrosse web sites like www.laxpower.com. The club's short term goal is to join the highly competitive Men's Lacrosse Collegiate Association (www.mcla.us). This is a league that is uniquely for schools that do not have varsity programs and is highly competitive (in many cases schools practice and play as much as division 1 programs). Many schools' athletic departments suffer from the Title 9 law of equal opportunity and are forced to play at a "quasi" varsity status in the MCLA (see schools like University of Michigan or University of Illinois). The Columbia men's lacrosse club hopes to enter the elite MCLA within the next year or two and eventually take the program varsity (Columbia is an oddity as it is the lone Ivy league school without a varsity men's lacrosse program). Current club members have worked hard to gather donations and keep the club highly organized and well coached to ensure future success.
