The Double Discovery Center seeks dedicated, motivated, inspiring and creative individuals to work with students in its Upward Bound and Talent Search programs. The following positions are available: Summer and Academic Year Teachers, Academic Year Tutors, Summer Teaching Assistants, Summer Residential Supervisors and Summer Residential Teaching Assistants.

UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM

Residential Teaching Assistants (RTA)
June 22 through August 9, 2008

  • Supervise and provide a safe and supportive environment for high school students in residence.
  • On duty 24 hours a day from Sunday afternoon through Friday afternoon.
  • Serve as a teaching assistant for three daily academic classes.
  • Plan and facilitate cultural and recreational activities.
  • One paid week of staff training.
  • Applicants must be matriculated undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing.
  • Preference is given to Columbia University students.
  • All majors welcome; science and math highly desired.

Residential Teaching Assistants receive $2,940 (pre-tax) for 7 weeks plus room and board.

Residential Supervisors (2)
June 16 through August 15, 2008

  • Supervise a staff of 17 Residential Teaching Assistants.
  • On duty 24 hours a day from Sunday morning through Friday afternoon.
  • Coordinate and supervise day-to-day operations of Summer Academy.
  • Supervise a staff of 17 Residential Teaching Assistants.
  • Plan and facilitate Summer RTA training.
  • Respond to student and staff needs in cooperation with full-time staff.
  • Previous experience in a residential camp or academy required.

Residential Supervisors receive $5,040 (pre-tax) for 9 weeks. Room and board provided for 7 weeks.

High School Teachers
June 30 through August 6, 2008

Positions open in: English (Literature and Composition), Mathematics (Algebra through Calculus, Statistics), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics), and Social Science (Global Studies, U.S. History & Government, Economics, Psychology, and Philosophy).

  • Instructor will teach high school students in three classes daily, Monday - Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
  • Applicants should have some teaching experience and an understanding of New York State Regents curricula.
  • Teaching experience in a New York City public school is highly desirable.
  • Candidates must have a BA degree, and preference is given to those with teacher certification and/or a graduate degree.

Compensation is $3,300 (pre-tax) for the summer. Compensation for instructors with NYS Certification is $4,050 (pre-tax).

TALENT SEARCH PROGRAM

Teaching Assistants (TA)
June 23 through July 25, 2008.

  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for 7th and 8th graders participating in the program.
  • On duty from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Serve as a teaching assistant for three daily academic classes.
  • Tutor middle school students in English, Social Studies, Math and Science.
  • Mandatory paid staff training one week before program starts.

Teaching Assistants receive $1,680 (pre-tax) for 4 weeks, lunch included.

Junior High School Teachers
June 23 through July 25, 2008.

Positions open in: English and Mathematics

  • Instructor will teach junior high school students in three classes daily, Monday - Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
  • Applicants should have some teaching experience and an understanding of New York State Regents curricula.
  • Teaching experience in a New York City public school is highly preferred.
  • Candidates must have a BA/BS degree, and preference is given to those with teacher certification and/or a graduate degree.

Compensation is $2,200 (pre-tax) for the summer.

High School Teachers
July 2 through August 6, 2008

Positions open in: Literature Humanities and High School Mathematics.

  • Instructor will teach 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grade students in two classes per day, Monday through Thursday from 1:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Applicants should have some teaching experience and an understanding of New York State Regents curricula.
  • Teaching experience in a New York City public school is highly desirable.
  • Candidates must have a BA/BS degree, and preference is given to those with teacher certification and/or a graduate degree.

Compensation is $2,200 (pre-tax) for the summer. Compensation for instructors with NYS Certification is $2,700 (pre-tax).

Academic Year (September-May)

During the academic year there are employment opportunities as tutors and teachers in the Upward Bound and Talent Search Programs. Preference is given to candidates from the Columbia University student population as well as credentialed and/or experienced teachers.

Tutors

From October to December and from February to May, tutors work with Junior High and High School students in small group tutoring sessions. Tutoring sessions take place weekday afternoons from 4-6pm, and tutors are asked to commit to at least two days per week. The tutoring calendar closely mirrors the Columbia semester calendar, with semesters lasting ten weeks in the fall and spring and ending just prior to finals week. Compensation is $10/hour. Work-study and non-work-study students are welcomed.

Teachers

Upward Bound
Teach two 90-minute classes on Saturdays during the Fall and Spring semesters. Semesters last for ten weeks, from October to December and from February to May. Teachers are responsible for all lesson plans and grading, including administering and grading a midterm and final exam and submitting student evaluations with each exam. They are also responsible for attending Parent-Teacher conferences once per semester. Instructors are needed for all High School subject areas (English, Math , Science, and Social Studies). Compensation is $1,100 (pre-tax) for the semester. Instructors with NYS certification receive $1,300 (pre-tax) for the semester.

Talent Search
Teach 60 minute classes on Saturdays during the Fall and Spring semesters. Semesters last for ten weeks from October to December and from February to May. Teachers are responsible for all lesson plans and grading, including administering diagnostic and final exams. Instructors are needed for all High School subject areas (English [Grammar and Writing], Math, and Science.) Compensation is commensurate with experience.
