Elizabeth H. Piper Scholarship Competition
With the support of an endowment established by Elizabeth H. Piper, each year, DDC's Board of Friends sponsors the Elizabeth H. Piper Scholarship Competition for 11th graders. Students prepare essays on one of a number of given topics covering current events and issues. After submitting essays, competitors give speeches based on their topics to a panel of DDC staff members. Staff members then select finalists, who prepare formal speeches for a panel of Board Members. During the final round, students give speeches and the judges have an opportunity to ask the students questions based on his/her presentation. Three prizes - $1,500, $1,000, and $500 - are awarded once the winners have accepted admission to a particular college or university. Students can use their prize money for any college expenses.
