2006-2007 Statistics

A typical DDC student lives in a household where English is not the first language, has a family income below the nationÍs poverty level, and attends a New York City public school with dropout rates above the already abysmal city-wide average of 14.6 percent and where the average student to counselor ratio is 1:330. Most of our youngsters reside in Manhattan north of 96th Street and are overburdened by poverty and inadequate family resources. Before admission, the average student is nearly two years behind in mathematics, would never master a foreign language and would not complete chemistry or physics in high school.National and local income disparity figures between those holding and lacking college and advanced degrees demonstrates that without DDC's intervention the majority of our students would likely join the nation's working poor or ranks of those on public assistance. In 2006-2007, DDC served 1,057 students; 80% were Talent Search; 20% were Upward Bound.

DDC's Success Rate

Despite all the difficulties associated with inner-city schooling and poverty, on average, 97% of DDC students finish high school and enroll in college. The chart below indicates the Center's success rate with students completing high school over the past 17 years.
