"Albion boy makes good"... News clippings from the Albion PA local
newspaper, 22 February 1945, about Eckert's appointment as Director of Pure
Science and IBM after his wartime service at the US Naval Observatory. In
addition to what we knew already about his work there, the article notes
that "Lifeboats of the merchant marine are equipped with a pocket
publication which serves the purpose of all the navigational
volumes usually carried on plane or ship. A pocket bubble sextant,
developed by Dr. Eckert for emergency use, enables one without special
training to determine his position within a few miles".
