Unfortunately the league side lost again on Sunday dropping us to 2+2 for
the
season. A few things didn't really go our way, but we have to figure out a
better way of chasing targets.

Having lost the toss we then got the perfect start with Dhruv taking a
wicket
with the very first ball of the game for the second week in a row (and
third
time this season!). An extravagent off-drive landed nicely settled in
Haseeb's safe hands at gully. Unfortunately the #3 was not dismissed until
the 38th over. The other opener wasn't great either, but managed to hang
on
until Haseeb replaced Michael up the hill and induced a nick behind,
pouched
by Kabir. 3+4 then played themselves in and took the game over. Certainly
with a little luck, but with some powerful and clean hitting, they put on
about 120 at 6/over including 16 off one over by Mark - a big top edged 6,
then a clean smash for 4 over extra cover - typical of the partnership.
Bowling at these two with their eye in was not pleasant, and Ed and
Faisals
figures don't look great. The ball dissapeared over the shortish
boundaries
with regularity. But the bowlers stuck to it admirably, not letting the
total
get rediculously out of hand so that we would have a chance to chase. Ed
got
the #4 caught by Haseeb at point, and the rest of the order didn't look so
great in the final slog overs. Dhruv and Michael bowled well at the end,
Dhruv eventually getting the #3, Ed taking a very casual catch at short
cover
off a full blooded drive. 187/8.

Without Gillen or Lakshmanan our batting was unlikely to be our strength,
and
chasing 187 on a long grassed outfield would take some doing, but we
started
well enough to give us a chance. Ed and Raghu saw off the openers with
Raghu
his usual steady self, Ed taking some chances to get the soring rate
moving.
31/0 off 10 left us 157 to get in 30 with all wickets in hand. Just over
5/over, so far so good. Ed was bowled trying to accelerate, but this
brought
in Uday who batted beautifully. Raghu (now with Ed as a runner) also
started
to attack some tiring bowlers as the shine went and the ball stopped
moving.
Uday cracked aelegant drive over the midwicket boundary and it was game on
at
90/1 off 21. 97 needed off 19 and we're going at 5/over. However, their
off-spinner, probably their best bowler (and top scorer with the bat)
induced
an uppish drive from Raghu that he caught himself. Faisal came in and next
over hit a good drive to long on who bobbled the ball. It looked like
there
should be two runs, and Uday turned for the second only to be sent back by
Faisal. Uday's momentum meant that it took him a while to turn as he was
charging downhill, and unbelievably, the throw from the boundary took
middle
stump out of the ground with Uday 6 inches short. Kabir got a leading
edge,
and they then tightened their fielding, slowed the scoring rate, and shut
us
out of the game. With the slog on the final 7 wickets went for 35 runs,
131
all out, the only highlight a big 6 from Mark. Unfortunately Mark tweaked
a
hammy taking a single which given the match situation could cost us dear
in
the long run.

If one of the shots by the two 7* batsmen had gone to hand instead of
falling
between fielders we certainly would not have been chasing 187, and who
knows
what would have happened if Uday had not been run out in his prime, so
there
are some positives to take. However, we need to get back into the winning
habit, starting on the 24th vs Albion (league by this week - 17th).
