We got the official league season off to a good start on Sunday with a 90
run victory over NewYorkXI. Having won tehtoss and decided to bat, Raghu
and
Sridahr opened confidently, both looking solid with Sridhar the more
aggressive. At 33/0 off 4 overs the field was dropped back, and they were
on
the defensive for the whole game. Sridhar looking to pick a gap in the
field
got a leading edge back to the bowler for a good 28 with the score at 65.
There followed 4 consecutive LBW decisions, all well on the front foot. At
least 2 of them should have put some doubt in the umpies mind. Oh well, at
least these are neutral umpires and genuine bad umpiring rather than
cheating. Uday, Kabir, Faisal, and Raghu all fell to the deadly finger,
but
with partnerships of 24, 22, 24, 67 the score was ticking along. Raghu
deserved a ton, but was triggered out in probably the worst decision on
92.
He will score heavily this year. Vishnu then looked great for his 44, but
after that we fell from 220/5 to 233 all out with an over to spare. That
was
the most dissapointing aspect of the day - we yet again failed to bat out
the
40 overs, having failed to do so in a single game last year. Not good from
the tail. For those that care the skipper was run out without facing due
to
some poor calling at the other end to take an early lead in the mallard
stakes. Thanks Vishy!
They were penalised 3 overs for a slow over rate, so were only due to face
37 overs. We got a great start from Haseeb, close to LBW first ball, then
bowling the opener 2nd ball. Haseeb was the pick of the bowlers, getting
the
other opener LBW, with Michael bowling steadily into the wind at the other
end. Hopefully he'll be more penetrating when not battling what was quite
a
string breeze. Ed and Sridhar replaced the opening bowlers at 36/2 off 10,
leaving them 200 to win off 27. With the run rate not accelerating in the
next 10 overs, NYXI were strangled out of the game, Sridhar getting their
best bat ct&b off a screamer, bowling another, and taking a great catch
off a
skier from Ed. 76/5 off 20, game pretty much over. Faisal and Ramesh
bowled
steadily enough, and with 90 to win off the last over I thought it was
worth
a big risk - putting on Uday to bowl! He justified the huge faith the
whole
team in this new bowler by getting the last man caught by Faisal at
point...
Good all round team performance based around an excellent 92 from Raghu,
fielding and bowling getting better, just need more from the tail.
