PresXI vs Snyder
Good day for cricket. We won
the toss and made 175 all out in 32 overs with
Laks (in partnership with
Siva) and extras making most of the runs. The
bowling all day was very
much a mixed bag. Snyder still contrived to record
6 ducks varying in length
between 0 and 10 balls faced. One good batsman who
finally lost patience as he
lost partners and they were all out for 135 in
28 overs. Furqan the pick of
the bowlers.
Good to see 3 new faces on
the field for CUCC; Apurva, Donald, Chris. An
entertaining knock from
Apurva, but they will all probably be looking to
improve for next week and
next season.

CUCC lost in the finals of
the Saturday league to New York City CC, the only
team that finished higher
than us in the final rankings. Just as the
semifinal was one of those
days when everything seems to just go right for
you, the final was one of
those days when we didnэt get any of the breaks.
Going in with a team very
strong in both batting and bowling, the match was
effectively over in the
first 7-8 overs of the day. We began horribly when
Nabil was given out caught
behind- one of the three horrific umpiring
dismissals we were to
receive in the day. Their opening bowler bowled
superbly, removing Faisal,
who had scored a hundred against them earlier in
the season, and Ashok, while
their first change accounted for Siva, so that
four of our top five were
gone far too early. Only two fine spells of
batting from Michael and Venu
saw us get past 100. They were the only two
who reached double figures.
Again, all of our bowlers
were in top form last week, and nearly the same
attack saw all of us being
wayward and far from penetrative. And the
fielding fell into the same
pattern, as we never curtailed singles, and
dropped a few chances. Not a
memorable day. And the third league final that
CUCC has lost.
In the end, though, a word
of thanks from me to all of those who got us this
far. Aside from the 11 men
on the field on Saturday (Ashok, Nabil, Faisal,
Michael, Siva, Venu,
Ghannam, Madhura, Vishal, Furqan)- Nasser (our
skipper), Omar, Bob, Jay,
Hassan, Haseeb, Malik and Saad all had valuable
contributions that helped
get us to the final. Weэve got a few more weeks of
cricket to come, with
Cornell, a side that we have yet to beat, visiting us
on Saturday.
Final: CUCC all out for 115
in about 23 overs (Venu 46, Michael 30)
NYC CC 116/4 in about 22 (2
for Faisal, 1 each for Madhura and Asad).

Asia CC is a side of many
faces- they beat us summarily in our first
encounter this season,
proceeded to wipe out the Sunday league side by 9
wickets and then brought a
bunch of kids to play us in our second Saturday
match, so we were not quite
sure what to expect at Kissena on Saturday.
There was only one kid in
the side, but many of the other faces we didnэt
recognize. We lost the toss
and were asked to bowl. Haseeb arrived and ran
onto the ground- laces
untied- just as Madhura was ready to send down the
first ball. That was good
enough to allow him to share the new ball. In
about the third over, ACCэs
senior opening batsman pulled up with a
hamstring injury. He first
requested a runner, but then decided to just sit
down and let it recover.
Their number three was a youngster who scored a few
against us last time. He
came out looking to drive, and did so too early off
of Madhura, straight into
the waiting hands of Michael at mid-off. But from
the other end, disaster in
Haseebэs third over- as he bowled his second
ball, he heard a ыpopэ in
his knee and could barely hobble around on it. He
said that he would complete
his over, off of a two step runup, and did a
fine job with those four
balls. This did, however, require an early bowling
change, with Furqan coming
on to replace Haseeb and striking in his first
over, knocking back middle
and leg with one that cut in ferociously. Furqan
struck again, beating the
outside edge this time, right into his brotherэs
waiting hands behind the
stumps. Asad replaced Madhura from the other end
and bowled a low full toss
with his first ball that the batsman tried to
drive, but Furqan pulled off
a superb catch, timing a jump immaculately and
catching the ball almost in
his fingertips.
At this point, a nice stand
began to develop, but in the first over after
drinks, with Nasser deciding
that the ailing Haseeb needed to stay in slips
to avoid movement, Asad
induced and outside edge that carried through to
Haseeb, very low, and to his
left that he took brilliantly, just inches off
the ground. At this point,
we were beginning to wonder just what the value
of that second leg was to
Haseeb. Another nice stand developed, and again,
Asad induced the outside
edge, this one, straight to Haseeb for a much
easier chance. From the
other end, Furqan came off after 6 excellent overs.
Vishal replaced him and had
early success as well, knocking back the stumps.
Vishal continued a great
spell, but with Asad done, Furqan was brought on in
an effort to wrap things up,
and when that didnэt work, Saad came on to face
a very belligerent ACC
skipper who took his toll. With the overs winding
down, Nasser turned to
Haseeb who proved yet again that he had reinvented
himself, getting the ACC
skipper to give Michael a regulation edge, again
bowling off of just two
steps. With that done, Madhura came back on and took
another, while Asad and
Michael combined to run out the final pair.
Excellent all-round bowling
performance from all, backed up by some very
sound fielding. Very welcome
change with the team rising to the occasion.
Chasing 4 an over was not a
mentally challenging target- still, we had yet
to win a game on this ground
this season. With Omar and Nabil being
sporadically available, and
Prabhu and Mushtaq missing most of the season
with injury, weэve struggled
to find a partner for Ashok at the top of the
order. On more than one
occasion Madhura has filled in and done a superb
job- more than once doing more
than just seeing off the new ball. He was to
have another good day with
the bat. Ashok and Madhura laid into the ACC
opening pair, who looked far
from potent. Both batted patiently, taking
their time to settle down at
the crease, but then hitting anything loose, so
that after the 7th over, we
were always at around 6 an over. The opening
stand was for 66 runs, with
Madhura falling to the first ball of the
left-arm spinner.
Unfortunately, in the same bowlerэs next over, Ashok was
gone again, and Michael
joined Siva for a stabilizing partnership. While
Michael was looking a little
streaky, Siva looked comfortable until he
walked, on stumping decision
that Saad looked in no mood to give! Nasser
went in for a cameo, while
Ghannam didnэt last long. With the target not
being far off, we were not
really concerned, but getting close. Vishal
joined Michael though, and
took full toll of anything loose. The two of them
batted sensibly, as we
always had overs in hand, and made sure to get the
job done quite comfortably
in the end.

win by 5 wickets.
After much effort on Friday,
we ended up making the trip to Rutgers with
only 10. Vishal had to first
wait for Hassan, and then had issues with the
van before they went to pick
up Madhura, who was running down Riverside
drive, chasing the match
ball. Usual Saturday morning for Columbia.
Meanwhile, back at Rutgers,
the other 7 of us were moving back and forth
between grounds, as the
pitch that we were meant to play on was being used
for soccer, and the second
choice was not a very good pitch. We finally
ended up at a park where a
NJ league team was having nets for a Sunday game
and we were told that we could
use their pitch once they were done. By the
time the van arrived, nets
were over, and we had lunch, it was a 2:15 start.
Good toss to win, and we
batted first. Going in with what I thought was a
relatively thin batting
lineup, we proceeded to put together one of the most
well paced innings I have
seen this season. Madhura opened with Ashok. In
the second over Madhura
picked up a full length ball on his legs and picked
it up superbly for a big six
over square leg. Given that the pitch was on
top of a hill, and the
outfield was heavy, this was going to have to be the
tact for the day.
Unfortunately, the pitch, though of very even bounce, had
variable pace in it, and
when Madhura looked to drive in the next over, he
spooned one up that was
easily taken. Nabil joined Ashok and after a few
uneasy moments as he
adjusted to the pace of the wicket, he and Ashok
settled into a groove. The
bowling was far from penetrative, but the middle
bowlers bowled within
themselves, with the left arm spinner in particular
bowling pretty decently.
Both batsmen though waited for the loose balls and
made sure to hit them well.
By the time Ashok was finally dismissed (though
weэre still not sure how,
Madhura gave him caught behind, while I gave him
stumped!), the two had put
on around 100 runs.
At about 110 or so around
the 20th over, we were well poised to step on the
accelerator. Hassan was
promoted and took advantage of their skipperэs loose
bowling, launching a couple
over the ropes before missing the line. When
Nabil was out soon after,
Ghannam and Omar were at the crease together and
continued the pace with a
combination of well placed boundaries and singles.
Ghannamэs dismissal provided
a moment of entertainment as he pulled one to
square leg that the fielder
took with the help of his ample tummy.
Rutgers was facing a mental
challenge, chasing 190 to win in 30 overs, even
with us being a fielder
short, was never going to be easy. And they didnэt
start well. In Asadэs first over
the opener looked to pull a shortish
delivery and ended up skying
it back to the bowler. Their skipper came in at
3, looking to redeem himself
after a bad bowl and looked like he enjoyed
driving the ball. A couple
of overs later, he looked to pick one up off of
his legs, but did so
uppishly and straight to Nabil. Their number 4 lost his
middle stump a few overs
later and they were in deep trouble. In ambled
their big opening bowler to
join the lefty, who was unnerving Madhura a bit,
because of having to change
his line. It looked like these two would be the
last resistance. Vishal
replaced Madhura and bolwed a superb over to the
lefty, getting him to
provide the nick from the last ball after flirting
outside of off stump all
over. After an Asad maiden to the big number 5, he
launched into Asadэs last
over, with his second shot falling at Madhuraэs
feet because he ьcouldnэt
see shitю! But Furqan replaced Asad and bowled the
big boy in his first over,
ending all resistance.
From there, it was time for
Furqan to run through Rutgers, returning
phenomenal figures and
insuring an easy win for Columbia.
Iэve left out much of the
entertainment value of the game, but Iэm sure
Hassan has expanded his
horizons on just how much equipment can be fit into
that ample rear end of his.
And Nabil will not be making any more personal
calls while Columbia
cricketers are standing around him!

Clippers Aug 24th
We actually played cricket
in the drizzle on Saturday, and it turned into
quite a good, if moist,
game.
Madhura lost the toss and we
were asked to field of course with heavy rain
predicted. A fairly light
drizzle fell for most of the game but not enough
to stop the enthusiast! I
don't think we dropped any catches which makes a
pleasant change but we only
managed to take 5 wickets as they took advantage
of the short boundary to
score 186/5 off 30 overs. A good catch down by his
ankle by Ashok and a good
spell by Furqan were the highlights.
We knew we'd have to score
quickly at the start as the ball would get soft
and heavy soon. Omar and
Ashok started us off well with 26 off 4 overs
before Omar lost his off
stump, and Ashok had the castle rearranged too.
Nabil was joined by Robyn,
but then a strange event as Robyn missed the
ball, was in his crease,
then wandered down the pitch for some standard
gardening, but the keeper
took the bails off and claimed a stumping. Much
debate about the ball being
dead, and whether there was intention to run,
resulted in Robyn being
given the finger (and the shaft). Nabil was looking
comfortable and stylish
until a top edged pull off a long hop first ball
from the first change
bowler. Siva and Ed then put on about 80 to get us up
to about 150 and needing a
run a ball, not so bad because there were singles
everywhere with some awful
fielding by Clippers. Sadly Siva played on off an
inside edge, Ed did the same
4 overs later, Ghannam was given LBW, and
Madhura, Furqan, Anwer and
Saad fell trying to chase the run rate from the
first ball. 170 all out,
loss by 16 runs.
Madhura is fucking useless
at copying up sorecards so some of the details
below, I've guessed.

ннннн Clippers win by 16 runs
Saturday saw us pitted
against Asia 11, one of the teams that had given us a
sound thrashing earlier in
the season, and had many of the same members as
Pak America, the side that
had given our Sunday team a 9 wicket thrashing as
well. Considering that, we
had a very strong side, hoping to counter these
guys. Unfortunately, the team
that showed up was not even a shadow of what
we expected. They had 3 guys
who must have been in their 40's, maybe 2 in
their 20's/30's and the rest
were a bunch of kids, well under 20. Having
seen this, losing the toss
was not a happy situation for us, heat and
humidity aside.
We were asked to bowl, and
with Mark still unsure about how his ankle would
respond, Madhura and Asad
opened the bowling. Madhura bowled a tidy first
over. Asad picked up the
outside edge with his second ball, but it didn't
carry through. The next ball
though saw a slightly thicker edge, that
Ghannam picked up with a
nice extension to his right. Their number three was
an interesting bat who liked
to flash at the balls that offered him some
width, but left alone
deliveries that were perilously close to his off
stump. He survived a fair
number of these from Madhura and Mark, who
replaced Asad. Furqan
replaced Madhura and Mark struck, with Venu taking his
first of two sharp slip
catches for the day. Furqan struck soon as well,
with Faisal taking an
excellent running catch from point, at a deep
backwards gully. At this
point, their number 4 and 5, who were not as bad as
we thought, put together a
nice little stand, though the runs were never
coming at a very good rate.
The righty finally came to terms with Mark's
pace and was able to lean
into a few and pierce the offside field for a
couple of boundaries. But
they both mishit the ball into the gaps without
much control. For Furqan, we
had an offside field of a slip, a gully,
backwards point, and point,
with only one person in front of the wicket.
Mark finally broke the
stand, after watching the righty play an over from
Furqan and noticed that he
had no real defense to the shortish ball on the
body. He placed Madhura
right on the batsman's hip, dropped it in short, and
squeezed out the catch,
which Madhura used his ample mid-section to
cushion(!).
After about 20 overs of
right arm seam bowling, we decided to shake things
up and brought on Faisal to bowl
some spin. The move paid off with his first
ball, as he was struck
straight to Gokul at long on. Faisal continued to
frustrate the batsmen,
flighting the ball, and varying his pace and length,
and picked up wickets at
regular intervals. From the other end, Kabir was
brought on, and the batsmen
seemed a little more at ease against his flatter
deliveries. Having Madhura
constantly applaud any shot played off of Kabir
no doubt encouraged them as
well! He did induce the false strokes though,
and with Faisal, wrapped up
the innings. Not before their number 10
successfully executed a
reverse sweep off of Faisal that only left the
bowler smiling wryly though.
Fielding was good. One
simple catch went down, while a couple of more
difficult ones did as well.
But we took plenty, making sure they didn't
score more than they should
have.
Chasing 147, with an
incredibly strong batting lineup meant that only two
fifties could be had. Nabil
and Gokul looked determined to make those. Nabil
began the innings pulling
the first ball bowled superbly to the backwards
square leg boundary. From
there, they slowed a bit, but the bowling had
nothing in it, so they took
singles and doubles and made sure anything loose
made it to the boundary.
After about 8 overs, the rains came, and they had
to come off for about 10
minutes, but then we were able to continue. Nabil
finally lost his patience
and hit one in the air, and the catch was taken.
Kabir was determined not to
waste time, but to get after the bowling. That
approach didn't quite work.
But when Michael joined Gokul, it looked like a
comfortable 8 wicket win was
on hand. Gokul was retired as soon as he
brought up his 50, and that
proved to draw things out longer than needed be.
Venu joined Michael and saw him
get run out. Ghannam played a half-hearted
shot to mid off and to his
dismay, Faisal had to come out and bat. Though he
hassled Venu plenty at the
crease, the two were able to wrap things up for a
pretty leisurely day of
cricket.
This should qualify us for
the post-season. So lets win this Saturday and go
in on a winning note.

Excellent batting from Uday
with good support from Gokul saw us off to a
good start against Warriors after
winning the toss. Kabir carried on the
good work after Gokul was
stumped on the stroke of drinks. At 108 for 1 off
20 overs we looked set for
250 plus. Unfortunately, their leggie (their best
bowler by far) bowled pretty
well and we wound up with a half decent 224/9
with some late run outs. On
a fast outfield it certainly wasn't a really big
score.
We didn't bowl nearly well
enough. The lefty opener took full toll as we
bowled a succession of leg
side balls and by the time he skied one off
Haseeb, then Ed got the #3
via a leading edge, they weren 123/2 off 14 at
drinks and needed only 100
off 25 overs. We would have to bowl them out.
Lakshmanan then came on and
was the pick - after an expensive first over his
next 7 went for only 21 and
he picked up the other opener, a very good bat.
Faisal alos slowed the
scoring but they didn't really need to push it. Then
came the controvesial
moment. Their keeper smacked Faisal way out to long on
where Madhura took a very
well judge catch on the boundary. The batsman was
not happy believing that it
was a 6, I think for no other reason than he
thought he hit it as far as
he could. The boundary out by the house at VCP1
is pretty deep, and Madhura
was well inside the boundary as far as I was
concerned. Many of the Warriors
poured onto the field claming that the cone
had been moved back by a
family playing baseball there (not exactly an
unusual occurrence...). Lots
of shouting, pushing, swearing etc etc. But the
umpirse finger remained up and
that was that. They were clearly upset
because thay didn't have
alot of batting left, but on an absolute belter of
a pitch we couldn't get them
out and they scored the remaining 50 runs in
about 9 overs to win by 5
wickets with 9 overs to spare.
We're now at 5 & 5 and
with ACS on the horizon we'll have to play well to
finish above .500

ннннн Warriors win by 5 wickets
Scheduled: PresXI vs Cavalry.
They didnэt show up.
Well, another bad weekend
for the Saturday side. We were all at the ground
for a noon start, and when I
called the opposition to see how far they were,
I was told that 4 of their
guys had backed out, and they didn't have a team.
Nice of them to tell us.
Another team we won't be playing again.
With the matting already
down, we decided to make a day of it and play some
double wicket, with my name
randomly drawn to partner both Aamir and
Ghannam. Format- each pair
would receive 5 overs in which all runs would
count, and any dismissal
would cost them 5 runs.
First pair up was Sarkar and
Vijay, and the two of them posted a fine total
of 42. Should have been
more, but they lost a fair number of wickets.
Madhura and Ashok followed
them, and posted a total of 44, managing to
psyche the fielders out a
couple of times by laughing madly as they settled
under the ball for a catch,
and both times the ball dropped through.
Third pair was Asad and
Aamir, and they posted a modest total of 23, largely
due to two wickets from
Madhura's last two balls.
After a break for drinks,
Bob and Furqan came out and batted sensibly,
losing only wicket en route
to a solid 52. Michael and Saad followed with a
modest 27, and it was up to Asad
and Ghannam to see if they could take 53
from 5 overs. Furqan's first
cost 14, and they managed to level the scores
with one Madhura over to
come. For those who remember last year's over/under
30 game, you'll know that
Madhura is something of Ghannam's bitch. Needless
to say, Ghannam belted 4
boundaries from the over to give the pair a 16 run
win.
It was decided in the
beginning that the winning pair would get everyone's
match fees for the day. So
we went to the pub for a round of beers and
cranberry/orange juice, with
sandiwches from next door.
Honors for the day went to
Ghannam for a solid batting display, and Vijay
for conceding only 9 runs in
his 3 overs. Asad had dubious honors of being
bowled 4 times, twice by
Sarkar.
In the end, a fun day for
all.

A
very sticky day at VCP on Sunday with thankfully some cloud cover to keep
the
sun off for most of the afternoon. Ed lost the toss and in to the field
we
went. Dhruv and Michael both bowled relatively poor first overs and at 22
for
0 off 2 we were looking at a long hot day. Fortunately both bowled alot
better
after that, with Dhruv taking the wickets with huge amounts of in
swing.
All of the top 5 went to Dhruv in an inspired spell - his first ever
Michelle
(five-fer). After getting the left handed opener to spoon to Faisal
at
square leg, Madhura was positioned precisely at short leg, and the #3
obliged
by guiding it to him first ball. Dhruv then got a couple bowled and
a
slightly dodgy LBW, but he'd been plumb before so no regrets there. Ed
then
came on to beat the outside edge with away swing at least 10 times,
finally
getting the edge that Venu held second time at slip. Robyn took a
catch
off Ed, Madhura got a nick behind to Gokul, and Dhruv bowled the #9
for
a 6 wicket bag. At 118 for 8 we fell into the same trap as usual and let
them
score way too many for the last 2 wickets. The last stand had put on 44
before
we mercifully put them away with a run out at 196 - about 60 more
than
they should have got. At least 4 catches went down and there were 43
extras
- clearly work to be done there. I'm sure we could be a bit more
clinical
in finishing opponents off with either a leggie or a left arm
spinner,
but they don't grow on trees. If anybody knows a left hand bat/slow
left
armer sign him up!
After
Ed went early again, splicing a pull, Rubaiyat looked a little
scratchy,
but having score 87 and 100 in the previous 2 weeks, Faisal was
seeing
it like a football. a stand of nearly 100 put us in the driving seat,
and
although we lost wickets we made the target fairly comfortably. Faisal
top
scored again with 44, Rubaiyat got 33, Robyn, Kabir, and Chris chipped
in,
Chris with an entertaining if somewhat agricultural 16, then Venu and
Gokul
saw us home by 4 wickets. Fortunately they bowled more wides than we
did
which is saying something.
Well
played Dhruv and Faisal.

After
the usual events of a match at VCP- waiting for Leslie to pick up the
upmire,
we began about 35 minutes late, reducing the game to 35 overs each.
I
won the toss and elected to bat on a day when rain threatened throughout,
but
never fell. With what looked to be a potential short batting lineup,
Madhura
went in as makeshift opener with Ashok. Disaster struck in the third
over
when a ball jumped up and hit Ashok in the face. Lots of blood and the
seam
put a deep gash in his upper lip. He went off to the hospital where
there
was a 5 hour wait at the emergency room, so he went back to Jersey to
get
stitched up there. Hope you're feeling better Ashok. Hassan went in to
replace
Ashok and all chances of his being shaken up by the trauma were
dispelled
with his whacking his first ball faced for a boundary. In this
time,
Madhura had hit a fair share to the fence himself, milking the region
between
the keeper and point, and between the hands of the slip cordon
fielders
as well. Hassan had his wood-work rearranged soon thereafter,
bringing
Michael to the crease. I had informed Michael before we began that
the
lineup was to revolve around him today. And he took those words to
heart.
Initially he played second fiddle, as Madhura continued to hit the
bowling
that became very mediocre once the opening pair came off. He brought
up
his 50 from his 49th ball faced. At drinks, he was told by everyone that
this
was the bowling attack, and the fielders that he could score 100
against.
After
drinks, Madhura and Michael continued to attack. Our rate was always
very
strong with 81 in 10, and 136 in 20, we were well poised for a late
attack.
Madhura finally skied one that was held onto for a well played 66
that
is sure to remove the tag of 'makeshift' from his name. Venu joined
Michael
and proceeded to step up the scoring rate, as he was clearly not
interested
in running between the wickets. Unfortunately, he ran out of
steam
and was retired for a brisk 41. At this point, we were beginning to
wonder
if Michael would give us the second successive Saturday hundred,
after
Faisal's ton last week. But he was tired, and the lost 5 overs didn't
allow
him to get there. Clearly though the batting revolved around his well
paced
90 not out.
Losing
Ashok meant that we would field only 10, but defending 252 with a
side
packed with bowling should not have posed any issues. Haseeb made sure
to
get us off to the right start with a wicket from his fifth ball. I was
gifted
one from the other end with my first ball, and then watched the
umpire
turn down two leg before appeals that had the non-striker asking how
they
missed the stumps! No matter, as Haseeb continued to bowl with fire,
and
picked up two more wickets in fairly quick time. At this point, a 14-odd
year
old came in, lulled us into a sense of confidence, and then proceeded
to
whack me around the park, and take 13 from Haseeb's last over as well.
Furqan
replaced me and bowled as steadily as he always does. After Haseeb's
sixth
from the other end, Saad came on, and struggled with his line, sending
down
a fair number of wides. But when he was on line, he was deadly, as he
effectively
ended the resistance. He took three- all bowled before Furqan
and
a very gracious catch from Madhura off of Hassan ended their misery.
I've
left off much of the bickering and shouting that was going on, amongst
our
own team. Hassan was in rare form, so much so that the umpire asked me
is
I had anyone else who could field in his place, as he was getting
irritated
by him!
Good
win. That's two in a row- lets keep up the momentum.

CUCC
win by 115 runs.
CUCC managed to retain the ashes over the weekend in a good contest played
in
exceptional weather - a good weekend all round. We won by 25 runs with
about
9 or 10 balls to spare in quite an exciting finish - they were up
with
the rate until about 5 overs to go.
Having
chosen to bat and being reduced to about 30/3 with Laks, Bob and
Rubaiyat
falling to what were, we were assured, not typical SCCC catches -
all
were good ones - Robyn and Gokul got us back on track. Gokul top scored
for
the innings with 34 not out, Robyn had 31, Greg added 12, but Jay, Ed
and
Mark went for ducks on the usual tricky pitch. Venu also managed his
fourth
consecutive duck top edging a heave after "patiently" seeing out 3
balls.
CB with 4 wickets, and Avinash with 3 were the bowling threats. 135
all
out, 50 short of what I thought we should have scored.
Ed
got their opener with some away swing, Mark was bowling quicker than
anybody
else in the game off 3 paces and snagged the 3 and 4 batsmen
including
James for a duck. The No. 5, Melvern, then swept an away swinger
from
Ed off about middle and off to the square leg boundary! Clearly a good
eye,
and he proceeded to swing the bat with good effect hitting almost
everything
to leg, but with a good enough eye to get away with it. Venu got
the
other opener LBW offering no shot to one that nipped down the slope, and
Laks got the skipper caught behind by Edwin (sharing the gloves with Bob).
CB
and Melvern then put on the best partnership of the day to take SCCC
close
to the CUCC total. Ed managed to get CB just before stumps and stumps
were
drawn with SCCC 140 for 6. The tail was wrapped up efficiently by Mark
and
Ed in the morning leaving Melvern 74 not out and SCCC with a lead of 32.
Bob
and Gokul started our 2nd inns but Edwin had been struck down by food
poisoning
and the only other person around was James - he had an appointment
at
1 o'clock so he batted at 3. Bob set off like a train and racked up 28
with
some impressive aerial drives but was dubiously run out looking good.
James
hit a quick 25 with his dog running around the outfield, and CB
barking.
SCCC were not amused as James has scored a duck for them the
previous
day. Rubaiyat also looked good with Gokul solid as ever. At about
100
for 2 I wanted to set them about 160 in an hour plus the minimum 20
overs
in the last hour. Gokul, under instructions, went for it and was
eventually
bowled for a good 36 (although it was listed in their book as
blowed
which was interesting). Laks and Robyn had a go too with Rubaiyat
solid.
Then came the race for the 4 guys on ducks to see who could bag a
pair,
with Venu clearly starting favourite given recent history, but Ed,
Mark
and Jay not so far behind on a pitch where getting that first run is
not
so easy. Jay was first up and didn't make us wait - smoting the first
ball
to deep mid-on who held on. Admirable team spirit in going for quick
runs,
but perhaps a mite hasty. Greg looked good in getting 15, Rubaiyat top
scored
with 38, Venu, Ed and Mark avoided the dreaded pair with Mark run out
last
ball before I was to declare on 188 leaving them 157 to win in what
turned
out to be 34 overs - a tough but fair target.
Exertions
in Pink on the Sat night were having their effect as Ed took 2
quick
wickets even whilst bowling rather raggedly. Mark looked good but
didn't
get a wicket and Venu and Greg couldn't break through a partnership
of
75. Laks was the man as the last 20 overs started and the run rate crept
up,
getting both and then CB first ball - clearly a turning point. a few
overs
of CB hitting sixes the size of some from the day before would have
been
disastrous. Glenn the left hander then smacked us about and kept the
rate
close to the RRR with Greg bowling their skipper Sanjay. Mark got
Avinash,
then in an effort to keep Glenn on strike Mac was run out. Mark
effectively
ended the threat with Glen getting a steepling top edge to Bob
who
camped safely underneath with the gloves. We needed only one wicket to
win,
but SCCC gamely ignored the possibility of a draw with their last man
run
out with 10 balls and 25 runs to spare.
I
think a good time was had by all, the sea food was good, but Pink didn't
offer
the same excitement. at least to Laks, as last year. I'm sure we'll be
back
next year.

н Columbia win by 25 runs.
After
much difficulty in getting together a playing 11, we made it on
Saturday
morning with a pretty sound side. Nasser lost the toss, and we were
asked
to bowl, after discussions of how hard it is to chase a 200-odd total
with
the umpire.
Haseeb
and Asad opened the bowling, to an unusually patient pair of opening
bats.
The fielding woes of weeks past looked to be creeping in early when a
sitter
went down in the gully in Haseeb's first over. After that, though,
the
bowling was accurate, and the batsmen took few chances, seeing off the
new
ball. After 10 overs, when the opening bowlers came off, the score was
only
24/0. Furqan continued the accurate bowling with aq couple of maidens,
but
from the other end, Suhail struggled, and was carted about a bit. With
the
introduction of spin from the south end in the form of Faisal, the
batsmen
began going for their shots some more. It was not until the 19th
over
though, that Furqan finally struck, trapping their more aggressive
opener
lbw. A couple of overs later, the other was gone as well, in the same
fashion.
But with their first wicket falling so late, and the field spread
out
a bit for Faisal's spin, the batsmen were able to have a go at the
bowling.
Faisal was finally rewarded with some tidy work behind the stumps
from
Ghannam to pick up a stumping. But going into the 30th over, only 3
wickets
were down, and their number 4 was beginning to open up. He just
managed
to clear the long on boundary, but their skipper was not as lucky,
as
Asad had to hold him on the boundary with a cry of 'catch it' from
Faisal,
in total anguish! Haseeb and Asad came back on to close out the
innings,
and a couple of more wickets fell, which helped contain them. Given
that
they lost only 6 wickets in their 40 overs, we probably held them to
30-odd
runs less than they should have made. 3-4 genuine chances went down,
but
some generally accurate bowling held them well.
After
spending 40 overs in the sun, chasing 217 was not going to be easy.
But
they had shown us that the pitch was flat, and that patient batting
would
get us there. We also had a major advantage in that they only went our
to
field with 9 men. This gave our batsman extra confidence. Ashok opened
with
Anand and after playing out a couple of slow overs, Ashok was gone for
a
duck, as their opening bowler seemed quite accurate. This brought Faisal
to
the crease, and he was to be there until the end. Anand was gone after a
little
bit as well, which brough Nasser to the crease, with the intent of
playing
a captain's knock. Faisal and Nasser both took their time in getting
to
know the bowling, and played educated shots around the ground. With only
9
fielders, they were also sensible enough to keep the score ticking with
singles
and doubles even when the bowling was accurate. But as their change
bowlers
came on, and the fielders began to tire, both Faisal and Nasser were
able
to open up. There was one scare for Faisal as he lofted an easy chance
to
mid-on when he was on 49, but the ball was dropped to bring up a fine
fifty.
This only served to remind Faisal that the task was not complete and
he
buckled down to continue his innings. Nasser finally got out to a shot
that
was belted, but straight down the throat of the mid wicket fielder. The
two
had stabilized the ship though, with a 101 run stand for the third
wicket.
Ghannam
joined Faisal and played very sensibly as well. He played out the
good
balls, and made sure anything loose made it to the boundary. By this
point,
the fielders were looking a bit defeated as well. But after Ghannam
fell,
sharing a 62-run stand with Faisal, they perhaps sensed that it was
their
last chance to run through what they hoped was the beginning of our
tail.
Hassan came to the crease, and they brought back their opening bowler,
who
at this point, had given only 14 runs from his 6 overs. Faisal took 3
from
his first ball, and then Hassan belted him for 4 consecutive
boundaries,
giving him a 19 run over. From there, the question was whether
Hassan
would let Faisal get his well deserved hundred. But there were enough
runs
still to get, and Faisal brought up his first three figure mark for the
club,
after scoring 87 last weekend- clearly the batsman in form.
It
was a great victory for the club, as we kept our cool chasing a strong
total,
and our batsmen were sensible enough to pace their innings, and rally
around
the rock that was Faisal, holding our innings together.

CUCC win by 6 wickets
Another
hot day in VCP, so no hesitation in batting after winning the toss.
Unfortunately
the make-shift opening partnership didn't last long with Ed
slashing
straight to 1st slip in the second over. Dhruv stuck with Gokul for
10
overs though before a wild swing at the spinner, but then came 2 of the
best
partnerships of the year. Gokul and Faisal put on 67 before Gokul lost
patience
the ball after reaching a well earned 50, then Faisal really got
into
the mood hitting beautifully through the line and picking out the gaps
to
put on 94 with Ramesh. The outfield had been cut so there was full reward
for
Faisal's sexy shots along the ground, with some excellent extra cover
drives
and also some beefy bashes over midwicket. With only 3 wickets down
and
10 overs to go we had enough in reserve for a good slog and got up to
231/6
in 40 overs. Venu managed to get himself out for the third time in 3
balls
for his 4th consecutive duck to streak ahead in the Mallard race. Best
paced
innings of the year with 60 off 15, 150 off 30, then 230 off 40 overs.
Great
stuff, and it left the Spurwings fielders exhausted.
Dhruv
produced the classic Groovester first ball - looks like a juicy half
vollet
outside off, swings like a banana through the gate, middle stump
gone!
Dhruv took 3 in 6 overs, Michael another at the other end, which left
them
46 for 4 off 11. Ed got a little swing to get an LBW in his first over,
then
Venu had an interesting 2 over spell with 2 wickets in 2 balls, but
mixing
in 7 wides! Ed got another but we then ran in to the usual problem of
not
finishing teams off - it took us another hour at least to get the last 2
wickets.
Saad induced a knick behind eventually, but Vijay, Mohan and Ramesh
couldn't
threaten. Faisal eventually uprooted all 3 stumps with his second
ball
to put us all out of our misery with a win by 77 runs.
Excellent
batting from Faisal and Gokul, decent fielding, good bowling to
start
with but we need to keep at it. a solid team win especially with some
of
our stalwart batsmen missing.

Sat leagueXI vs Rockaway
July 13th Kissena
As
per Dr Edwards request, here is a brief summary of Saturday's game vs Rockaway
at
Kissena
Park. Weather was about just right, loss the toss, fielded with 9 to
begin
with, shortest boundaries ever played at Kissena Park which was
apparently
the doing of the umpire, 4s and 6s were flying everywhere,
Nasser's car was broken into, Rockaway scored 299 for 10 with their star
batsman
Kundan, the cat with 11 lives in his case, scoring a huge 169. The
"11
lives" of course = 11 dropped catches. CUCCн ended up with 170 for 10.н
Nasser's
45 (probably the quickest) and Ghannam's patiently earned 61, were
the
best efforts of the day. A day to be less remembered....
Ashok.

Something
wrong with the card below - their #6 scored ALOT of runs and was
not
out at the end, but he is not in the card we copied up later.
Anyway,
it was hot, we ran around a lot and dropped catches for fun. Usually
safe
hands like Kabir dropped straight forward chances, and he was by no
means
the only one. I think at least 10 chances went down.
Michael
bowled the best, Anuj and Vishal were steady, Ed got some expensive
wickets
late with the short boundary very inviting. We had them at 140/5
after
30 overs but gave up 100 runs in the last 10. If we had taken the
catches
earlier they would not have got close to that many...
Ed
and Rubaiyat both were bowled by good away swingers, and they took the
catches
we couldn't. Faisal batted well, and after a flourish from Anuj
including
the biggest 6 of the day, we were all out for 114.

Sat leagueXI vs AsiaXI Jue 22nd
Kissena
Saturday league side lost to AsiaXI by 60 plus runs.
Once again itэs our
fielding that cost us the game (5 dropped catches and about 20 plus runs due to
poor ground fielding). Well gentleman we canэt blame
dropped catches on any oneн
but ourselves so lets try and do some thing about
it, I suggest we meet 30
mins early and work on our fielding.

LeagueXI vs World
Wide XI June 16th VCP
Great
batting from Uday, Kabir and Faisal, along with 34 extras saw us to
243
for 8 in 40 overs.
With
large black clouds looming we were hustling to get in 15 overs to make
it
an official game. Good stuff from Haseeb and Madhura, then Ed including a
belatedly
recognised hat-trick (over 2 overs) by Ed on catches by Haseeb,
Robyn
and Faisal saw them reduced to 60-5 in 15. Game pretty much over, but
after
the rain at drinks the game was reduced pretty much to a farce with
them
slogging a heavy wet ball around. Haseeb and Madhura eventually
polished
off the tail for a total of 158 in 31.4.
I
can't remember who took one catch off Vishal (see card below) - please let
me
know.

Good
to see CUCC winning both games over the weekend, speaks volumes about
the
depth of talent in the club that we can put out 2 league sides and win
both
games.
However,
Sundays game was alot closer than Saturdays. We think QuickXI may
be
based on the Friends team that we have played very close games with in
the
past - Mushtaq and Madhura recognised some of their players. On a hot
and
sticky day in VCP, it was a relief to finally win a toss, and against
the
umpires (!) better judgement I decided to bat. Uday and Laks opened
steadily
on a slow-ish pitch with an even slower outfield, Laks falling in
the
8th over hitting one to mid-off with the score 20-1. Rubaiyat joined
Uday
for a stand of 65 in 13 overs that ended with Uday given not out after
a
direct hit for a run out - a close decision - then smacking the next ball
to
backward point who held a good catch. Kabir then played the best knock of
the
day - sensible all the way and with some good running. Unfortunately
Rubaiyet
misjudged a second run and was done in by a good throw. QuickXI
certainly
fielded keenly all day and had some good throwing arms. Of the 9
wkts
to fall, 2 were run out, 7 caught so they fielded well, I don't
remember
them dropping many, if any. Faisal guided one to fly slip and we
were
117 for 4 after 28, but with 6 wickets in hand, were set to push on at
a
higher rate. This Robyn put in to immediate effect smacking 20 off about
12
balls, then the good work was continued by Subhas making his debut. After
a
few balls to get his timing, the ball started disappearing over the
expanses
of VCP1. Meanwhile Kabir had collected 39 runs over 16 overs and
fell
in the 37th. Solid stuff. We managed to pick up 20 runs in the last 4
overs
and were not bowled out for the first time in a while, Dhruv hitting a
nice
4 over long off to get us past 200, a very competitive score we thought
on
a tough outfield.
Somehow,
and this is GroundHogDay-esque in its repetitiveness, we struggle
to
hit boundaries all day, then the opposition bat and the ball flies over
the
outfield. Do they hit more in the air or do we just not hit the ball as
hard?
Answers on a postcard please. They scored 4 boundaries in the first 3
overs,
where we had 7 all day. I dived full length to get both hands to a
tough
chance in Madhura's first over, but spilled it, Dhruv missed a couple
of
return chances too, so we didn't start well, and probably put down 6
catches
in all. Again, poor fileding is letting us down - we might have
conceded
15-20 with bad ground fielding too. This we need to address to be
successful.
There were also 17 wides, and we didn't bowl a single maiden. If
we
had caught and fielded OK and bowled straight we would have made our
lives
alot easier... Anyway, the ball was at least going in the air, and
Robyn,
then myself took catches to have them 29 for 2 off 5, something of a
come
back. We did take wickets fairly regularly, but they were always up
with
the 5 an over rate. I replaced Dhruv for a 4 over spell bowling their
No.
4 through the gate, and Laks was steady at the other end. They then had
their
best partnership with a tiny little No. 5 (who had also opened their
bowling)
playing some remarkable sweep shots off the medium pacers, from
balls
on the stumps, with his head about a foot off the ground. There was
every
chance of a helmet before wicket dismissal, but sadly this never
happened.
Subhas warmed himself up with 2 overs of military medium, but did
win
a rather dubious looking LBW against their opener who had 48 at this
point,
and that may have ended up being the deciding wicket. "Mini-Me" as he
was
labelled by Madhura was also trapped in front after Subhas had converted
to
my preferred leg spin, although as he was bowling around the wicket, I'm
not
sure how impressed the batsman was with this decision either. Well,
we've
been on the wrong end of enough umpiring decisions. At 143 for 5 with
12
overs left they were still at exactly 5 an over. Laks finished his spell
then
Madhura returned for a couple. After a quick water break they needed 48
off
9, and Mushtaq bowled a good over of flat-ish off spin giving away only
2
runs. When Subhas conceded only 3 they needed 43 off 7, but Mushtaq went
for
a couple of boundaries. Madhura bowled his last at that end after a
great
spell of 3 for 34 from Subhas, leaving Dhruv and I to bowl the last 4
with
25 needed and 4 wickets to get. Dhruv got the skipper (and probably
their
last chance) first ball, caught behind, then I bowled the No. 9 and
they
needed 14 off 2 with not much batting left. Dhruv finished a good spell
of
2 for 38 with only 5 off the last over, then after a dot ball, I got the
No.
8 to hit one to Uday who took a good catch coming in from long on. The
middle
stump was sent cartwheeling next ball (almost turned to sawdust due
to
express Edwards pace according to one comment...) for a nerve wracking 8
run
victory. Good batting set it up, but we have to do better in all aspects
on
the field. We've now won 2 lost 2, so let's push ourselves over .500 next
week.

Another
absolutely beautiful Saturday afternoon saw us resuming league play
after
losing our first game, and being washed out the second time. Nasser
won
the toss and we elected to bat, after a slight delay in waiting for the
umpire.
Ashok and Nabil opened the batting against bowling that looked
wayward
from the sidelines, as five wides went down during the first over,
but
in the middle the ball was apparently swinging a lot. We lost our first
wicket
in the second over, as Nabil chased one outside of his off stump and
got
an edge that was well held by the ыkeeper, rather low. This brought
Nasser
to the crease and he and Ashok spent a few overs consolidating before
Nasser
opened up. He took 20 runs from the 10th over, 13 runs from the 12th,
13
from the 14th and 14 from the 16th, with our hundred coming up in the
15th
over. Clearly we were cruising. Nasser had to have Nabil come out and
run
for him after he tweaked his hamstring while turning for a run. Rather
than
take advantage of this, by bringing in a slow bowler that Nasser would
need
to use his feet against, the opposition kept feeding him. The two
stayed
together, adding 119 runs for the second wicket before Nasser struck
one
well, but right to the fielder at deep mid wicket. He scored 71 from 53.
Ashok,
who had picked up his scoring rate as well, was joined by Bob and the
two
continued milking the bowling to keep us ticking along at more than 6 an
over.
Ashok was bowled one run short of what would have been his third half
century
of the season. But this was enough of a base for the middle/late
order
to launch into the bowling with strong knocks coming from Bob, Michael
and
Ghannam, and a quick flurry at the end from Vishal and Asad, taking us
to
a comfortable 261 for 7 in 40.
Madhura
and Asad began against what was supposed to be a good batting side.
Asad
struck in his first over, getting lucky with a widish delivery that the
batsman
didnэt get to the pitch of, lobbing a simple chance to Ghannam. And
the
slide had begun. By the time Asad and Madhura came off after 14 overs, 5
wickets
were down, through a combination of good bounce and movement from
the
opening pair. Furqan and Vishal replaced us, and the only chance of the
day
that went down came from the last ball of Furqanэs first over, with
their
slogger getting a touch that Bob couldnэt hold. We all cringed as he
launched
into Vishal in the next over, taking 13-14 runs before being overly
ambitious
and missing one to see his off stump uprooted. Big sigh of relief
from
Bob! From there, it was a formality. Furqan and Vishal both bowled well
enough
to not require Nasser to bring on a fifth bowler. In the end, it was
almost
like fielding practice, with one dismissal guided ever so kindly into
Hassanэs
hands at gully, and another being given to Nasser, who could not
move
one step in either direction, at fly slip, right in his hands. We
wrapped
them up for 94, for a big victory. The kind that gives a side
confidence-
batting doing its job, bowling coming out aggressive, and
fielding
supporting it well.

No
time for a full report. A beautiful day that was a bit too beautiful as
we
ended up chasing a large total with the sun dropping behind the bowlers
arm
at one end. That combined with being on the wrong end of the umpiring
saw
us fall 20 runs short.
Great
bowling from Raghu, good from Dhruv and Madhura, the rest of us didn't
do
so well in the field with some catches going down, and shoddy ground
fielding,
along with less than inspirational bowling. One hip high full toss
going
a long long long way over the trees, and factory, at square leg.
Good
batting from Rubaiyat led the way with contributions from Kabir,
Fasial,
and Gokul, and wides getting us close.

An
adventure of a day as we played host to the U. of Albany at VCP on
Saturday.
The day began with us having a protracted argument with the West
Indian
gents who were preparing to start a game on VCP 2, as they didnэt
want
us playing on the neighboring pitch. After we essentially told them to
f**k
off, we went about trying to get our own game started. (And a good
thing
that discussion ended there. Reportedly, they scored 410 runs in 45
overs!).
Our own game was not to start until an hour after we had scheduled,
due
to the fact that Columbia was late in getting our 11 to the ground, and
more
importantly, the matting. With the opposition driving down from Albany,
and
being there on time for a noon start, I was so embarrassed that I
conceded
the toss to them, and they of course chose to bat.
Madhura
and I shared the new ball, and from the beginning, we could see that
it
was going to be a long day. Their burly West Indian opener was taking a
whack
at everything, getting lots of edges, but finding the gaps in the
field.
More than that, though, the trend was set very early in the day by
their
umpires- no lbwэs, and anything missing the bat would be called wide.
After
a fair amount of heated exchange with them, I told their captain that
they
were setting the standard for the day, reminded him that they would be
bowling
second, and then proceeded with the game. Laks replaced me, and had
success
in his first over, getting one to move away, and inducing a thick
edge,
that Ajay held superbly, diving in the gully. A few overs later,
Hassan,
making his comeback to the team, also struck in his first over, care
of
a lunging catch from the skipper. Hassan had another, and then proceeded
to
demonstrate to us the extremes of quick bowling, with his third over
being
absolutely superb, extracting bounce and movement, and beating the bat
with
all six balls, and then his fourth over being a combination of full
tosses
and short stuff! Nonetheless, we went to drinks at 80 for 3 in 17.
After
the break, I brought on Mushtaq, playing his first game of the season,
and
the slide began. Mushy proceeded to fool their batsmen with good use of
flight,
and the straighter ball, running through their middle order.
Unfortunately,
Laks was not getting any help from the umpires at the other
end,
and they kept calling wides, so the run flow kept up. All of their
batsmen
were having a heave, and finding gaps. But in the end, we took some
very
nice catches, with Hassan and Ajay taking hot grabs to end the innings,
and
Mushy beginning the season with a five-fer.
Ashok
and Omar began our reply, and it was clear that we wouldnэt need much
help
from the umpires, as their bowlers were going to send down a fair
number
of extras on their own. Having said that though, when they were on
line,
they werenэt easy to get away. Ashok missed the line of one, and was
bowled
for 4. As Laks and Omar set about consolidating, we saw a strange
sight
(Omar, you knew this was coming!), as Omar walked off the field with
the
score at 33, not being dismissed. He needed a bathroom break. Gokul
filled
his shoes, and lost his wicket chasing a very wide ball. Omar came
back
for a brief stay, and then the slide began, as we lost Ajay and Jay in
quick
succession. Fortunately, Laks had remained steady, and in Michael he
found
an able partner to bring us to within 40 runs of victory. But then we
had
another flurry of wickets fall, as Laks fell 4 short of his fifty, as
Michael
and Mushtaq went soon after. With 27 needed in just under 5 overs, I
joined
Hassan, and the two of us proceeded to test the fielding. Their
placement
was not good, and we picked the gaps, before Hassan sealed it with
four
deliveries- 4244.
Good
win in the end, as we remained focused enough to see it through, but
this
is not a team that should have taken us this far. With league play
returning
this week, we have work to do. Catching was very good, but there
were
still overthrows, and some lazy ground fielding. And Iэve also noticed
that
our bowlers tend to be better at getting out good batsmen, than they
are
at dealing with mediocre ones. At any rate, we won, buoyed by very
strong
returns from Hassan and Mushtaq, and fine batting from Laks and
Michael.

CUCC
vs. TriCity CC Saturday May 26th
The
less said about todayэs match the better. As dominating as we were in
both
games last week is just how badly we were dominated today. We made the
trip
to Schenectady, NY of 2.5 hours with 10 guys. Fortunately, TriCity had
an
extra. We won the toss and opened with Ed and Omar. Both were gone pretty
quickly,
as both opening bowlers were bowling well within themselves, the
wilder
of the two getting both wickets. Then we had a brief respite with
Lakshmanan
and Rubaiyat, making his debut for the club, at the crease. It
was
a pleasure to umpire at this point, as these two looked good.
Unfortunately,
just when Rubaiyat received a ball short enough to pull over
the
very short cover boundary, it kept low and he was trapped plumb in
front.
TriCityэs man, Manjit, joined Laks and the scoring slowed
significantly,
as he was quite out of sorts. We were 55/3 in 17 when he
finally
got out, as the first of five run outs for the day. Jay was run out
a
ball later before Ajay joined Laks for a solidifying stand. But at this
point,
their bowlers really contained us well so that both Laks and Ajay
were
run out within deliveries of one another, in an effort to force the
scoring.
Ghannam and I were able to strike the ball around a bit in the end,
but
154 on a ground where the square boundaries were barely 30 yards away
was
always going to be tough to defend.
Madhura
and I opened, and it was abundantly clear that their batsmen were
quite
familiar with their short boundaries. We had a chance go down in the
second
over, but aside from that, their batsmen were in complete control,
and
none of our bowlers was able to come to terms with the poor runups, the
short
boundary, or their belligerent approach. We didnэt make much of a
match
of it at all.
Only
redeeming quality for the day was Laksэ innings. Bowling ыhonorsэ were
equally
shared, as each one of us gave up two sixes a piece, though Laks got
honors
for being hit the furthest!
Lets
put this one out of our memories fast.

TriCity win by 8 wickets
A
good win for the Sunday league side to even the record at a win and a
loss.
The worst part of the day was Michael turning up an hour late and with
a
bum shoulder and back so that he couldn't run or throw let alone bowl or
bat.
Madhura asked him why he came at all...
Ed
lost the toss again (CUCC skippers seem to be useless tossers), so out
into
the field we went with 10 men. Madhura opened with Sridhar at the other
end.
Madhura bowled a good tight 8 over spell, probably the best of the day,
with
only 2 bad balls, both of which did travel to the boundary. After
Faisal
dropped a hard hit chance at point off Sridhar (dark thoughts about
dropped
catches again in the captains mind), I don't think we put another
one
down, which was a mighty relief. Madhura won a dubious LBW appeal (not
the
last of the day), then Faisal misjudged another but managed to fling
himself
backwards to hold it one handed. The next two bats were their best,
but
nothing to write home about. Ed replaced Sridhar and kept it tight,
getting
some movement to induce false shots, but not getting the ball in the
right
place enough. Laks took over from Madhura and also struggled with line
and
length, with the batsmen still failing to cash in. We will face much
better
batting line ups this year. Ed won another LBW, then Madhura was
still
being moved to the right spot at gully while Laks came in to bowl. He
had
just stopped moving as the ball was hit to him at knee high. From 80 for
4
they slipped to 118 all out with Ed taking one, Laks another 2, Ramesh 3
of
the tail. Good catching was the key with Robyn, Vishal, Sridhar, and
Faisal
a second, all taking good catches. We should have bowled better, and
will
need to in the future, and there were way too many wides.
The
only bummer after that was Sridhar had his bag stolen from under the
tree
at VCP1. We'll have to watch that - it's the second time in 2 years
(Kabir
had a bag stolen a while ago from the same place - both were smaller,
easy
to pick up types).
Uday
batted in mid-season form despite not having batted in the middle for 6
months.
Excellent effort. Sridhar and Laks were both unfortunate to get the
finger,
Edwin played too early second ball - the harder wickets to come will
please
all. Faisal batted very comfortably for his 32 after being dropped
early.
Uday was out with a few runs to get, and Robyn completed the
formalities.
We successfully chased both totals in Sundays games which is a
good
sign, and the fielding was hugely improved - a very solid win.

PresXI vs Merion
Sunday 19th May
Merion
CC is always a pleasure of a game, as those who have journeyed to
Philly
know what a beautiful setting it is. And somehow, though their team
never
seems too strong, we tend to struggle to win. Not the case today.
Nasser
loss the toss, perhaps fortunately this time, as Michael and Vetri
were
making their debuts for the club and neither Nasser nor I had played
with
either Ajay or Saad before, so we were walking into the game with a
fair
amount of uncertainty as to what our teamэs strength would be like.
Nonetheless,
we were predictably asked to bowl, and I opened the attack with
Ashok,
having his first bowl of the season. While I beat the bat a few
times,
Ashok took a few deliveries to get some direction, but seemed to
tempt
CUCCэs old ыcricket prostituteэ- Charu, a fair amount. When Nasser and
I
saw him loop one up and into a gap, we were afraid that that would be his
chance
for the day. But in his third over, Ashok bowled the other opener off
of
a no ball, and in his haste to keep strike, Charu scrambled for a single.
That
turned out to be a mistake, as he was tramped plumb in front from
Ashokэs
very next ball. Always a good thing to get Charu out for less than
10.
The next over saw their skipper David pop a catch up to Vetri who held
it
well, from my bowling. Their number three looked not to be the most
technically
sound batsman, but he was striking the ball hard. Vetri replaced
me,
and had a bowl for the first time in four years and struck immediately,
as
the number three strike one firmly, but right back at Vetri, which he
held
for a great catch. That brought our old friend Craig Joss to the
crease.
Heэs a big hitter who was going to be the wicket to get. Their
number
four also looked decent, though his back foot strokes lack any
footwork
at all, which was eventually his undoing. The two put on a 40-odd
run
stand before Saad trapped their number four in front, on the back foot.
From
there, Craig was having to farm the strike, and was beginning to get a
little
frustrated as Nasser came on to bowl some offies (though he did
welcome
Nasser to the attack with an effortless, albeit monstrous, six!).
Saad
mixed his bowling up well and finally bowled Craig from a slower ball
after
he had survived a very close stumping. That was the end of the run
scoring,
and though we didnэt get them all out, we were pleased to restrict
them
to 153 from their 35 overs.
Ashok
and Ajay opened the batting and took the attack to them. Their opening
bowler
struggled with his line and gave away a fair amount of wides. David,
who
often troubles us with his looping deliveries, didnэt have his stuff,
and
so Ajay was able to open up his hitting fairly soon, and they brought up
a
very comfortable 50 in 12 overs. Ajay did hit one too many into the air
though,
and was soon gone for a well played 28. Nasser joined Ashok, who was
to
regret this dearly. Nasser had decided that he was going to give Ashok
the
workout of his life, as he ran him between the wickets very hard. Ashok
was
tiring, after bowling 7 overs, but Nasser would not let up, and the two
really
pushed the fielders. By the time Ashok retired for 51, we were at
around
130, and the match was well over. Nasser was bowled by a ball that
kept
slightly low and Bob and Ghannam did the formalities, taking liberties
against
the hapless bowling.
In
all, a well-paced run chase by CUCC, chasing to win for the first time
this
season. And a good day for recruiting, as all four of the unknown
players
showed great promise.

CUCC win by 8 wickets.
Sat leagueXI vs Rockaway 11/5/02
Saturday was our first foray into the Saturday league system, and
unfortunately, it seems that I have to pick up my match report almost where
Ed left off last week. Clearly CUCC has some issues to sort out before we
make a dent into either Saturday or Sunday league sides.
We lost the toss and were asked to field- no surprise. On a beautiful day,
Madhura began from the south end of VCP 1, against a very aggressive opening
pair, with one guy in particular flashing at everything. With Madhuraэs
third ball, he tried an ambitious shot and got a top edge straight up to
Ghannam, who lost it at the last second in the sun to spill him. Needless to
say, not the start we wanted. Fortunately, that one didnэt cost us anything,
as Ghannam held a regulation nick from my fifth ball from the other end.
Their captain came in at number three and was rapped on the pads first ball
which clearly flustered him, as he set off for a non-existent run, and
Ghannam acted quickly to run him out. Two overs, two down. That brought
their number 4 to the crease, and he was clearly the strength of their
lineup. He was timing the ball well, and caused Madhura much frustration, as
he gave two difficult chances to Jay and Nasser, and looped up the ball in
the gaps probably 3-4 times. However, after that early period, he was spot
on, hitting some beautiful drives. From the other end, for the second time
this season, I managed to get a finger to a straight driven ball that went
onto the stumps, running out the non-striker. We went to drinks after 15
overs at 63/4. Furqan was introduced into the attack to replace Madhura and
had success almost immediately. He got their rather portly number five, who
had no off side strokes, to pop one up to one of the few safe pair of hands
on the field that day- Ed. Ed himself bowled very well from the other end,
being unlucky on numerous occasions not to find an edge, as he was bowling
with pace and getting movement. With the two of them bowling so well
together, their number four was getting frustrated, but Furqan put him out
of his misery with a beauty of a delivery that came into him late, and found
an inside edge onto his stumps.
Though Ed was not able to get a wicket, their 16 overs together had Rockaway
in considerable trouble, as Furqan bagged four from his end. Prabhu was
brought on as the fifth bowler and was clearly unnerving the batsmen as
well. Madhura, and then I came on from the other end to wrap things up, and
this was about the time that our fielding fell apart completely. We
proceeded to let down a few very simple chances, one adding insult to injury
by ripping the webbing on Prabhuэs right hand, so that he had to leave the
field and could not complete his spell. They took advantage of these lapses
and added probably 40 more runs than they should have, making it to 167 in
the penultimate over.
With Prabhu gone to the hospital to get stitches, Ed and Ashok opened
against a decent opening bowling attack. Ashok looked completely at ease
from the first ball, while Ed was struggling a bit. The two managed to put
on 24 for the first wicket, in reasonable time, but this was to prove the
only substantial partnership of our innings. Ed had his stumps rearranged,
and then Madhura joined Ashok and two balls later set off for a suicidal
single, stranding Ashok. From that point, it was steadily downhill. The
skipper notched his first duck of the season, and our middle order rescue
team of Venu and Ghannam couldnэt pull off the miracle that we needed. In
the end, we whimpered to a paltry 75 runs.
As a bowler I am obviously biased, but when the bowlerэs are bowling their
hearts out, as we did on Saturday, such poor support from the field will
leave us with no other result than what we had on Saturday. Aside from that,
our batting lineup is clearly struggling. We need to work on putting
together partnerships and not gift our wickets away. League teams will
field/catch much better than weэve seen thus far, so we need to raise the
level of our game in response.
In the end, a fond word of well-wishing to our esteemed CUCC member Venu who
has played his last game as a bachelor. Venu is off to India to get married,
leaving CUCC at the top of the batting table. We all wish him well, and hope
to see him join us on the field again soon.

LeagueXI vs Empire 5/5/02
Availabilities have been rather poor for the start of the league season. Having completed the eleven at 4pm on Saturday it was rather alarming to get to the ground to find no Lakshmanan and no Michael. Laks eventually arrived half an hour late, Michael never arrived. Not good enough gentlemen.
Firstly - give yourselves plenty of time to get to the ground - you all know what NYC is like, plan on being early not late. Second - you all have my cell phone Number. Use it. If you are unavoidably (rare) late, call.
I donэt have the book in front of me so Iэll have to estimate some of the numbers...
So, we went onto the field, having lost the toss, with 9 fielders. Annoying in the extreme. Dhruv opened swinging the ball but very erratic in line and length, Haseeb had good pace at the other end. Their openers werenэt great and Haseeb uprooted the stumps after a swing across the line. Dhruv beat the left handers regularly and eventually bowled a slow full toss that had the batsman drooling. Unfortunately he was well through the shot as his stumps were rattled. In his next over the umpire was about to signal a wide, but the batsman managed to just reach the ball to knick it for Edwin to take a nice catch, making his debut with the gloves. At 12 overs we took water and Prabhu had fortunately arrived with whites, and became ьMichael Raoю. Now the nightmare started. I replaced Haseeb and got the edge of the left handers bat to loop an absolute dolly to Venu at point. Unfortunately he nearly caught it at the second attempt. The first ball the right handed #5 faced was just short and he creamed it through point. Oh oh - clearly their best bat. Next over I brought the lefty forward again, got the edge, flying through slip, Raghu getting a finger tip to it. Much later Prabhu put down the righty again a very simple chance. Thatэs pretty much the story, the final total I think was 5 dropped catches, 2 missed stumpings, and a couple of didnэt-even-get-the-hands-to-its. The worst was with Raghu bowling, he tried to take a return catch and it looks like he dislocated a finger. A little blood and alot of swelling meant he had to go off the field and couldnэt grip a bat. So, these batsmen just tried to smack everything in the knowledge that a catch was unlikely to get them. They probably put on 150 taking them from 50-3 to 200-3 at 30 overs. We actually did OK to keep them to only 280-6 after that!
With Uday, Kabir and Faisal out, I would already have opened, but with Raghu gone too it was time to choose a (second) emergency opener. Clearly that would have to be the guy who batted #12 for the PresXI Sat. I have to say Madhura was excellent. We put on a quick 20 for the first wicket before I top edged to 3rd man, and Laks joined Madhura to keep the rate going (we needed 7/over...). The bowling and fielding was definitely weaker than their batting, so it was looking like an unlikely victory was possible if we could bat the 40 overs - singles were coming at will, there was at least one bad ball an over. Sadly Laks lost his patience and holed out to long off. This did however bring in Edwin who also batted exceptionally well. These two were going great guns until Madhura smacked a half-volley to long off for a beautiful 4. He must have been overly excited by this (apparently he hasnэt seen too much bedroom activity recently) because next ball he totally missed a straight full toss. 35 well struck runs, with drives and pulls, at a run a ball - note to Nasser - I would bat him higher than 12 next time! Vishal hit a few before Jay and Edwin shared another good partnership. Edwin classical, Jay not. Jay looks very stiff and awkward trying to defend the straight ones, doing a pretty good impression of a paraplegic crab, but given the width to swing the bat, wave the wand he did to magical effect, the ball racing away to the boundary many times. Edwin scored 38 and Jay top scored with 40, both excellent efforts. We needed about 110 off 12 overs after they had both gone (there were alot of extras I think) and Venu, Haseeb, Prabhu, and Dhruv managed to get us past the 200 and perhaps slight respectability, but the 280 was beyond us. A valiant effort in trying circumstances.
I reckon that the catches cost us about 60 runs or more - both of the guys who put on 150 together were dropped early and their lower order did not look too intimidating. Thatэs the difference in the game. Catches win matches. We have work to do...

Another
beautiful day for cricket, as we hosted the Gypsies on Saturday.
They
were playing their first game of the season, and it showed. After
struggling
to get our matting to the ground, without a van, we won the toss
and
decided to bat, sending our senior pair, Prabhu and Ashok. This after we
ended
up with a surplus of players, and decided to bat 12 a side. In
contrast
to our expectations, Prabhu took the early attack to the bowling,
while
Ashok played more of a supporting role. Their cavalier approach was
only
enhanced by the fact that Gypsies catching was atrocious, with both
Ashok
and Prabhu getting lives. Ultimately though, the full toss paid off,
as
Prabhu's stumps were rattled in the 11th over, with the score at 51. From
there,
we had steady partnerships, with Prabhu, Ashok, Nasser, Venu and
Ghannam
each scoring runs.
The
moment of interest came when Malik went to the crease, on a possible hat
trick
of ducks; he got off the mark immediately, and then was brushed on the
side
of the face by a ball that rose unexpectedly. As he came back to put
some
ice on it, he was muttering under his breath about how he would make
the
bowler suffer. We all watched with interest when he returned to the
crease,
but his aggression was controlled and he kept the runs coming.
Unfortunately,
once he was out, Ghannam was growing tired, as was the
bowling.
In the last five overs we didn't score as many runs as we should
have
(only 20 coming from those 5), as the bowling lacked any pace, and more
than
one of our guys were bowled because they had completed their strokes
before
the ball had arrived.н In the end
though, we made 208 for 10 (out of
11),
which should have been ample with a strong attack.
Madhura
opened from the south end, while I accompanied him from the north
end.
Mahesh, their one recognized opener, was driving the ball well from the
beginning.
From the other side though, we could see that their batting was
going
to be thin, as the other opener had no footwork at all. We had success
in
my second over when Mahesh lazily cut a widish ball into a packed offside
field,
straight into Malik's waiting hands at backward point. Malik of
course
had words for Mahesh, the bowler who had brushed his face earlier,
saying
that it was poetic justice that Malik should take his catch, though
not
quite in those words! From there, Madhura's tail went up, and he began
rattling
stumps from his end. He took the other opener, Sharat, then their
number
4, who also looked somewhat tentative. But his big prize came when he
got
their number three, Sukesh, the only other Gypsies player who looked
like
he could bat (aside from his physical resemblance to Aravinda de
Silva!).
He had hit Madhura for a four, and then a couple, but Madhura
replied
with a ball that cut back, and beat him all ends up, for his third
wicket.
After a bit of a lull, I struck in my second last over, and then
twice
in my last over, with Venu pulling off a superb take in first slip,
his
first of three for the day. When Madhura and I were bowled through, 7
Gypsies
wickets were down and it was up to Furqan to do the formalities. He
bowled
well, and had Ghannam take a beauty, diving to his right, and then a
regulation
catch to Venu in the slip. From the other end, Venu bowled well,
generating
some pace, and being unlucky as a couple of chances got edges,
but
found the gaps, and Malik couldn't hold on to a low chance. Finally
though
Ammad was brought on and Venu took another sharp slip chance with
Ammad's
first ball to wrap things up.
With
the Saturday league beginning from next week, our bowling looks
consistent,
and our fielding was also pretty good, with Ghannam and Venu
taking
a couple of superb catches. Our batting looked more consistent, but
we
still need to turn some of our 20's and 30's into fifties.

Beautiful day for cricket today, as we were off to Westfield, one of the
better teams that we play against on Saturday, with a particularly
challenging wicket. 120-odd on their pitch is an ample total to defend. They
won the toss and elected to bat. Furqan and Madhura opened the bowling to an
aggressive pair who looked to drive everything, but didnэt look too
technically sound. In Furqanэs second over, he was driven to long off, and
while he was arguing with the umpire over a short run, my return throw came
in and hit him square on the foot, giving him much discomfort for the rest
of the day. From the other end, Madhura took both their openers and was
bowling well. Furqanэs foot and his runup were bothering him enough so that
I took him off after only 3 overs, and brought on Nabil, who was mixing it
up well, and was rewarded with a ball played onto his stumps with the last
ball of his first over. After Madhura finished 5 tidy overs, I brought
Furqan on again, as this end had a smoother runup, albeit slightly uphill.
It clearly suited him, ad he uprooted their number 3эs off stump, and then
in another of those classic Columbia moments, took their number 5, who
looked to be a solid bat. Nabil had been fielding in slips, and then asked
me from across the field if he should stay there, and very loudly I
responded that he should come out, and in front of the wicket. Of course,
very next ball, the batsman tried to guide one through the now vacant slip,
only to get a finer edge than he had hoped to get, and Ghannam held a nice
diving catch to put them in some trouble at 50 odd for 5.
After the drinks break, their troubles only worsened as I took two wickets
in my opening over, replacing Furqan, with Warren holding the first of those
two on his second chance. At this point though, their 8th wicket pair played
very sensibly. They were aggressive, found the gaps in the field, and ran
very well. As the partnership developed, they took more liberties, and found
the boundaries. The pair was not to be broken up until the 34th over when I
came back, and Warren took a superb running catch at long on. One more
wicket in that over, and then Madhura finished them 4 balls short of their
35 overs. They made 134, with their number 8 and 9 doing a great recovery
job.
Our chase didnэt start well with Chris falling to the second ball. Nabil
joined Ashok and the two watched a fair number of wides go down, and clubbed
a couple of loose ones, with a classic pull shot from Nabil. Our rate was
cruising at around 5.5, but Nabil got a good ball that took his inside edge.
Ashwin consolidated well with Ashok, but with Ashokэs wicket going, we slid
from 42/2 to 45/7, as our lack of batting depth was exposed. No great
bowling, but some careless shot selection from our guys. When Furqan joined
Ghannam, victory looked long off, but the two batted well together, playing
patiently and waiting for the loose ones. They were together for 34 runs
before Furqanэs concentration finally lapsed, and that was effectively the
end.
We let them score 20-odd runs more than they should have with not the
tightest ground fielding during the 8th wicket stand, though our catching
was solid. But we lost the match because of not applying ourselves to the
task at hand. With a side of all-rounders, we were all going to have to
price our wicket highly, but in the end gave them up very cheaply.

>Result: CUCC won by 17 runs
As much as I am in no mood to send this report out, Iэll fulfill my
obligation. Holdmel is a side that we have played consistently for the last
few years, have close games, and always end up on the losing side, with the
real heartbreaker ending last season with a one run loss.
Though we didnэt get the snow flurries that those who played on Saturday
got, Sunday was plenty cold as well. The day started with our skipper
getting a wake up call from his many passengers waiting for him at his
garage, as he didnэt account for daylight savings time. So we began at 12
and Nasser was fortunate enough to reverse his 2001 season end form with the
tosses, winning and electing to bat. Ashok and the CUCC returning President
Hassan went out to open. After an 80 run opening stand on Saturday, we saw
the other extreme with Ashok being bowled at 5. Hassan followed soon after
for a duck, bringing Nasser to the crease to join Faisal. In a side light on
batting, this needed to be a big stand. Nasser started where he left off at
season end, playing consecutive shots to the boundary but then got an inside
edge onto his stumps, and when Ali fell to a well taken caught and bowled,
we were reeling at 39 for 4. Venu, who was unceremoniously declared at 44 on
Saturday joined Faisal, and the two set about rebuilding our innings. Both
exercised patience and tested the fielders who put down some very easy
chances. Faisal was in very promising form, waiting for the bad balls, and
pacing his innings, while Venu continued to attack the bowling. This was the
highlight of the game for us with the two putting on a 103 run stand in good
time before Venu tried one too many and was caught for 50. With 94 runs this
weekend, heэs off to a flying start. Faisal brought up his 50 as well before
having his stumps rearragned for a very solid 52. At 150 for 6 with plenty
of big hitters coming and about 5 overs to go, we were looking at at least
175, but should have targeted 200. We ended at 180/9, probably 20 runs short
of where we should have been. Great stuff from Faisal and Venu though.
Dhruv and Asad opened the bowling to two very aggressive batsmen. Their
skipper, Zohair, is the kind of bat who looks to pull every ball, even those
well outside off stump. That resulted in some chancy shots, but he managed
to stay safe. Some tight bowling finally put the pressure on them as they
set off for an impossible single which Raj returned perfectly to Ghannam for
a run out. Dhruv followed by trapping their number 3 leg before, but that
was it until almost the very end. Dhruv and Asad bowled 14 overs straight
though with the most positive sign being only 5 extras between the two of
them, however probably two more wickets were needed. Michael replaced Dhruv
and troubled them with his left arm angle, and his bounce, but they were
able to come to terms with some of the shorter balls, hooking them. From the
other end Raj struggled in a first spell before being replaced by Faisal.
Faisal found it too cold for him to be able to grip the ball for spin, so he
bowled medium pace. Though he was hit for a couple of sixes in his first
couple of overs, he was troubling them. Unfortunately, they ran between the
wickets well, we dropped catches and none of our bowlers were really able to
put enough pressure on the bats. Karthik finally lost his battle to Faisal,
but by that point they were at 149. Zohair also went, but the loss of so few
wickets allowed the number 5 and 6 to come out swinging. Though we were in
it to the end, with 29 required from 6 to win, a few big hits kept them
ahead of the asking rate.
In the end, with 5 needed from 3 overs, Hassan was given the ball to see
what he could do, but a waist high fist ball full toss disappeared for a six
to end the match.
Consistent bowling for a first game of the season, but not enough pressure
applied. The fielding was also quite poor, allowing singles when the ball
was hit right at fielders, and putting down a few catches.
