Match Report, July 1&2, 2006
Captain: Venu

Opposition: Rhode Island
Venue: St Columbus CC
Man of the Match:
 Mayur (SCCC)

Folks,

The RI game saw the second defeat of the season for CUCC and a big one too. SICC decided to replace their usual grass wicket with a synthetic matting with grass/mud covering 3/4 of the pitch. This meant the ball hardly rose to ankle height and would scoot thru. People slipping while running into bowl, batsmen gettign run out when sent back cos they couldnt turn around without slipping on it. Most of the batsmen got out to balls either keeping low or going below the bat.

We dropped to 9/3 in the first innings before Madhura/Laks and then laks/michealP put on decent partnerships to pull us out of the rut. Later Sunil, and Sriram played well to take us past 100. We were bout 20-30 runs short on the kind of surface we were playing for. SICC started brightly with their opening pair puttnig on a 50 runs partnership. Venu got their opening bat bowled and this opened the flood gates. For what followed was swing n a miss - stumped, sw! ing n a miss - bowled, swing n run n run-out. Prabhu ran through their batting and what was 52/1 was soon 83 all out with Prabhu picking up 6 of wickets and also playing a hand in getting 2 runouts with sayan being the feilder on both occasions.

The night saw us heading out to salvation cafe (local joint) and a 20 run lead. However we started the second even worse than the first day. At 9/3 we were exactly where we were on the first day but soon we slumped to 16/6 as batsmen after batsmen made a beeline to the pavilion. With just 2 ppl reaching dbl figures I guess the rest of the story is understood. We scored an even 50 and thanks to extras (21) we got to bout 71.

SICC started well again and though Sunil bowled very well to get rid of their opening bat and the 3rd guy we were never in the game. The opening pair of the first innings this time put up another 60+ run partnership for the 2nd wicket. The game pretty much ended there, and CUCC lost by 7 wickets. The biggest loss of the season and we also managed to loose the Ashes which we held for the last 5 yrs.

Guys - Its not nice when you have the opposition on the field, in whites, ready to go and waiting for our guys to turn up - well beyond the start time. Its even worse when you do it to them 2 days in a row. I can only hope we do not repeat this in the future for I think I have said enough about it on the field.
